President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I heard a rumor that there's some insanity going on around here, and that some people are actually blaming President Bush for this disaster.

Are there that many DU infiltrators on FR..........is Robert Kennedy now a disguised freeper?

What's going on here??

Mark my words, the death toll is going to be unbelievable.

Or did the potential death toll just get way more awful

It's awful. There are still many trapped in St. Bernard and other areas, and the toll is worse than anyone in authority is willing to admit yet. But, "awful" doesn't describe what we will hear in the next couple of days.

I saw lots of military on MSM tonight. I think that was an exaggeration.

Well, there should be a lot of work in construction/contracting over towards Gulport and Biloxi. I'm not too sure about the same in New Orleans yet.

Texas appears to be absorbing much of the population. There is a shelter here in Austin, one in San Antonio (future home of the Saints too). People are discounting apartments and hotels too. I think we will find that if people are forced outside of NO for 3+ months and have no job or home to go back too they will collect their FEMA assist and homeowners insurance and make a home in their refuge city where I hope they look for and find jobs.

If they come to Texas, they have to be good to their neighbors helping them. Looters need not apply.

He says it is like being nuked.

I said this earlier today, but not on this thread, so I'll say it again.

We all need to be watching what is going on during this crisis and rethinking OUR disaster plans in the event we ever have to put them in action.

I've seen several "items" I am thinking of adding to me, starting with an inflatable raft. :-)

Mayor declared martial law tonight and pulled all of his cops from search and rescue operations.

The Mayor and Governor should both be charged but I agree they won't.

I have been thinking the same thing. A nuke going off would have caused far less damage. I've heard this compared to a nuclear attack a few times now, it would be better if it had been IMO.

The whole city is a write-off. 80%+ is flooded and the rest is being forcibly evacuated, which means that the everything which is not flooded will be ruined by fire, rain, mold, mildew and whatnot during the several month period the city is vacant.

I repeat, several months of evacuation in that climate, given the extent of the flooding, means that everything except the structures of the newest & sturdiest buildings will be effective total losses.

Crime has nothing to do with it. Nature doesn't need any help from humans.

I certainly hope the people who actually heeded the call to evacuate don't end up being the one's with no place to go... that bothered me a lot.
