BALTIMORE (August 31, 2005) Emergency managers up the east coast and elsewhere are reporting serious gas shortages.
"We may be facing a major fuel supply situation," reported a county-level emergency manager in South Carolina. "We in this county are cutting all non-essential services such as garbage pickup. It is a developing situation."
Gas stations in upstate South Carolina reported they were running out of gas. "The state is telling us the pipeline that services the northeast has been disrupted at the supply point in Louisiana, and that it will take a week and half for it to reach us," he said. "A lot of gas stations are out and closed in this area."
In North Carolina, a gas station on U.S. 74 reported it had only premium gas left and was selling it for $2.99. Station managers say they are unable to get gas from their suppliers. A nearby competitor station reported it had to close altogether because it was out of all fuel.
In Michigan, gas prices were as high as $3.92 for unleaded regular in Garden City, just one of many stations with high prices in the Detroit metro area. Forty percent of Michigans gas comes from the Gulf Coast.
Hurricane Katrina shut down a number of oil platforms, refineries and pipelines.
Yep, I'll be hunting too.
People really are panicking, aren't they? I can't believe how many people have turned into socialists overnight...
"Pilot Truckstops relesed a news story that their pimps will be dry in 48 hours"
Dry pimps, imagine that.
LOL!
The way I remember it from the 70s is that all it takes to deplete the reserves is for 'everyone' to rush out and top off their tanks at once. Likewise if we 'all' didn't buy gas for 1 day we bankrupt the oil companies.
But then again both these lines may be myth.
Now that requires federal intervention, if anything does!!
"Good grief... get a GRIP people... What is this, like the tenth newbie panic thread today?
I think somebody went way long on his gas futures day trading and is trying to recover his losses."
What do you mean? I just finished filling the 3ea 1,500 gallon tanks I bought this morning. I have the pumps and will be selling fuel tomorrow morning on the side of the road. I'll give you a heck of a deal.
Anything that cuts down on traffic is fine by me. :-)
I can tell that prices are not "too high" yet just by looking at all the cars on the highway. When it gets "too high" then people will drive less. Simple.
$4.00? $5.00? Annoying... sure. Not crippling. Not worth panic.
Yep, my in-laws in the UP of Michigan had both their vehicles tanks emptied out.
I wouldn't call it gouging, diesel's big claim to fame is being cheaper than gas, how much cheaper though nobody says. If gas is selling at X then diesel for X- 10 cents sounds fair to me. It's a pretty rare thing for me to accuse somebody of gouging, last time I remember doing that was when some guys were selling gas for $5 on 9-11 that was definitely gouging (no serious threat to the supply line yet more than doubling the price), short of that it's just taking advantage of market conditions. And while I'm sure this is going to put a slight crimp in the diesel supply chain it probably won't be nearly as bad as gas.
I wonder if i can find mine from the "70's!? (and are the keys still with them?)
Well, because I was out and not sure I had enough to make it home on. :-)
Folks, if we have no trucks, and people panic over food supply, all bets are off for a civil end to this mess. With our "Just in time" inventory system of food, we may have about one to 2 weeks of supply -- that is a run on grocery stores do not occur.
"I didn't expect the ripples from Katrina this far this fast."
Never underestimate the speed of greed of the oil cartels and the speculators.
By creating "shortages" they can short-circuit attacks for "gouging".
Ha!
Where do you find this? I do not see diesel cheaper than regular gas?
