Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.

Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.

No Children's Hospital Looting 4:35 p.m.

Doug Mittelstaedt, vice-president of Human Resources for Children's Hospital in New Orleans, said one of the biggest issues at the hospital on Wednesday was debunking the prevalent rumor that looters had stormed the hospital.

Mittelstaedt said things actually were operating smoothly at the hospital - the generator was running efficiently and efforts to relocate patients were going well - but fighting the rumor was a major issue.

Officials had to lock the doors of the hospital because people had arrived, apparently thinking there was a mob scene and they could get in on looting.

He said the hospital has been flooded with calls offering assistance from other Children's Hospitals in Louisiana and Texas. "The amount of calls we have gotten for support have been overwhelming," Mittelstaedt said. "The phones literally have been ringing off the hook."

With so many calls, Mittelstaedt said officials have been able to match up the 100 patients with hospitals that specialize in the particular treatments for each.

"I've worked in six different hospitals and every one had a security staff. In those hospitals I was a pharmacy technician. The pharmacies have extra security. I still say there's something fishy about this story."

I have a feeling security left NOLA Saturday or Sunday. Didn't you read on one of these threads that at a certain nursing home, all the workers left on Sunday? One nurse stayed with the patients.

No, I'm not. The more I think about it, the more I see how this could happen. It's just hard to imagine. What to do would depend on many things. How big is the hospital, etc. If they scrambled really fast, they could get all the kids to one floor, lock it off, and let the vermin take what drugs they want. But then again, a hospital in that situation is going to need every ounce of every supply (not just drugs) they have for the emergencies and the sick people that will soon be flooding (no pun intended) it. Sorry about my skepticism. All I can do is pray.

Me too. If LA had started mobilizing for potentialities the moment they know they were going to get hit, you'd think they could have some kind of force ready to hit the ground as needed.

MS already has boots on the ground and are arresting curfew violaters as we speak: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1473894/posts

That would eliminate the need for survival looting, i.e. food, water, etc. by getting distribution stations set up ASAP. You then go after the real looting with a vengance.

They knew this could happen, they should have been ready. Dimes to dollars the final analysis will be lawyers, PCism, and corruption will have been the root of the screwup.

Just FYI the "jerks" in no way applied to you... What I mean is that those who cheat welfare take it away from those who truly need it. Sorry if that came across wrong.

Let's just say that those looters aren't new to what they are doing. They just have more "excuse" to "survive".

Haley Barbour is the Rudy Giuliani of the storm. I can't think of a better person to have as Mississippi Governor right at this moment.

I didn't think it did it's just that many people seem to paint everyone that is on welfare with the same brush. I felt the need to speak up for the minority that really do need the help.

"This almost makes ME want to get some guns."

ALMOST?

What would it take?

I urge every FReeper to have at least one firearm, and know how to use it.

Well, they could never conclude that the Republican Governor did better than the Democrat Governor, could they?

Why would anyone want to loot a hospital?

In the autobiography of former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, he describes how he used to work at the Philadelphia Children's Hospital. One day as he was preparing for surgery he heard that they were out of scalpels. Upon investigating he found out that the hospital was being robbed blind by the employees. He and some other doctors had all the exits to the hospital sealed except for one and set up guard there. Soon employees leaving work were seen approaching the exit carrying large bags. When they saw what was up they turned around. Now that it was established that the thefts would no longer be tolerated the problem was greatly diminished.

Oh no. In fact, they will blame the chaos in LA on Bush, the hurricane on Bush (global warming - no Kyoto), and then say Bush/Rove favored resources to MS to set Barbour up for '08.

And of course the kicker, HAARP (ordered by Rove) will have steered Katrina toward our refinery facilities on the coast in order to jack up gas prices!

Full story mentions they are armed and most are wearing fur coats.

WTF? Crazed, armed dandies in fur coats? This is sounding like something out of "A Clockwork Orange".

"You haven't been to the DU swamp lately. It's ALL Bush's fault."

I don't have to read DU to know what's going to be said.

Bush failed to comply with Kyoto, thus the hurricane.

The victims were all the poor of New Orleans that have been abandoned by Bush's cruel capitalist system and didn't have the means to evacuate.

More would have been saved if the Guard wasn't tied up in Bush's war for oil.

Yada yada yada
