NEW ORLEANS With much of the city flooded by Hurricane Katrina, looters floated garbage cans filled with clothing and jewelry down the street in a dash to grab what they could.
In some cases, looting today took place in full view of police and National Guard troops.
At a Walgreen's drug store in the French Quarter, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers.
When police finally showed up, a young boy stood in the door screaming, "86! 86!" the radio code for police and the crowd scattered.
Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.
"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."
Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.
One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.
"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."
Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.
Mike Franklin stood on the trolley tracks and watched the spectacle unfold.
"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.
A man walked down Canal Street with a pallet of food on his head. His wife, who refused to give her name, insisted they weren't stealing from the nearby Winn-Dixie supermarket. "It's about survival....

If you knew of my experience in the area of preparedness and disaster recovery you wouldn't be making such stupid insinuations.
I'm not supporting looting as I made clear in my first post on this thread. I can make exceptions for the food and necessities (diapers & tampons things) in this kind of situation though. There is no water available in most locations and I certainly wouldn't be drinking what is floating around the house. But the idea of leaving an IOU is good to.
That is not an appropriate comment.
FNC had the Louisiana AG on. He was excusing and minimizing the looting.
He either had NO CLUE or was trying to cover up.
Necessity to NOT DIE is understandable in such an environment of total devistation.
I think the police have abdicated in favor of street thuggery.
You have to consider the ones who stole plasma TV's as optomists. They think that at some point in the future it is going to have value. (and the serial number not be traceable)

New Orleans police hold shoot guns as they try to keep people away . . .

Aren't you supposed to shoot one of the looters so the others will swarm on him to feed and leave the good guys alone?
Oops; that's what to do for sharks. My bad.
"Mmmm! Bucket of Beer"
I've only just opened this thread from the beginning but I'm gonna take a wild guess and figure it's already R-word namecalling.
FR's favorite contact sport.
and Jackson MS and Memphis
whoops....
I find it funny that one poster said that the people are stealing big screen TVs and computers to sell later on for food and a deposit on an apartment. I highly doubt these people are looking that far into the future.
Me either. Sad what a difference.
Did you read the latest "X2 Looters shoot NOPD..."? This is what happens when you do not enforce the law with a firm hand at the outset to get a handle on things. Now it is night and Katy-bar-the-door time.
No sob story "po folks" crap, this can turn into anarchy in a heartbeat. Time for swift, decisive and very strong reactive, overwhelming force. You do this for the safety and protection of the good citizens, and there are plenty of good citizens.
The criminal element must be crushed quickly and decisively, no group hugs.
I disagree, and the empiritave evidence is clearly on my side here.
What do you disagree with and what is the empirical evidence?

The instances where society has broken down in the United States in the past 100 years are exceedingly few and far between.

You need to visit Atlanta.
Watch the video. Read the accounts of what is happening. That's ample evidence, my friend......and I also remember many similar incidents in the past. Do I need to list them?
We are not discussing history but according to you, I need to get my (paid for) TV fixed because 99.999% of the people I see are NOT white Swedish Nuns. Some societies evolve to become more civilized, others do not.
ROFL thx
And somehow, I have the suspicion that there are posses of POS, just like these POS, around the country arranging to come down on N.O., etc, and burglarize along w/the native POS there.
