Looters take advantage of New Orleans' flooding (It is a Free for All)

NEW ORLEANS — With much of the city flooded by Hurricane Katrina, looters floated garbage cans filled with clothing and jewelry down the street in a dash to grab what they could.

In some cases, looting today took place in full view of police and National Guard troops.

At a Walgreen's drug store in the French Quarter, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers.

When police finally showed up, a young boy stood in the door screaming, "86! 86!" — the radio code for police — and the crowd scattered.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.

"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

Mike Franklin stood on the trolley tracks and watched the spectacle unfold.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

A man walked down Canal Street with a pallet of food on his head. His wife, who refused to give her name, insisted they weren't stealing from the nearby Winn-Dixie supermarket. "It's about survival....

I don't believe the NG are armed.

The looting needs to be put under control, though.

Gotta love the brewsky stashed in his back pocket -- making the most of his limited carrying capacity. I wonder if he's always so thorough?

The "food for survival" argument always tickles me. It is based on the notion that these people had no food in their houses to begin with. If Atlanta were flooded out today, I'm sure I could still live for another 2-3 weeks on whatever is in the pantry.

Well, good for you. In case you didn't notice, these folks aren't in Atlanta. And in case you didn't see the pictures, unless they stored their pantry in the attic, I doubt the food in the houses is any good.

Not armed? NG is in danger if they try and stop looters. Notice the tape of the looters have gone 'missing'.?

That is anarchy, no matter who is standing there with a gun.

Does anyone know how many days of supplies people were told to have.

They were told to Leave. Evacuate. Or go to the Super Dome bringing a couple days of food with them. The criminal element stayed behind to have ready access to their drugs and the sure opportunity of looting.

What a bunch of horse manure! Spoken like a true liberal! I bet he was white too!

Its called stealing, but hey, I really can't blame some people for taking food and drink. Now TV's and DVD players are another thing. You can't eat those.

Heck, without electricity you can't use them anyway.

No, beer with its alcohol content is going to make them thirsty. Alcohol does dehydrate.

Only when he's sober, which won't be much longer.

The "law of the jungle" must not be allowed to prevail

It will prevail whether you allow it to or not. Taking food that will spoil anyway is not the same as taking a TV or a watch. If you wish to leave an IOU then I think that is great.

I don't think everyone here has comprehended how bad things are in these cities at the moment. The water is still rising. These folks can't go check into the local motel until their house is fixed because the local motel is also ruined. This is going to be a very stressful time for awhile.

"It tells us that the population of New Orleans is at least 68% black"

Actually it feels more like 90% if you have to ride the bus around new orleans. But then again, if you take the Lakeshore bus, which costs 2.00 as opposed to 1.00, the black population on the bus drops to about 40%. Same with the Streetcar (except the streetcar is 1.00, but goes through some wealthy parts of town, the private universities, etc).

. Did you see her chomping at the bit for microphone time at the presser today?

Yes, Daddy Moon taught her well, didn't he? But she thought of the face lift and do-over all by herself.

Perhaps you shouldn't post on threads if you only expect one answer to your posts. Put your big girl panties on and deal with it.
