Looting Begins in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

snip...

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

snip...

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

snip...

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

"Diamond rings and 32 inch televisions aren't going to feed anybody..."
Absolutely. I can understand taking food if you and your family are starving but this is disgusting. No doubt the looters were Kerry voters.

This started up in dade county after hurricane andrew.

Residents engaged in healthy self defense to stop it.

Out of curiosity, I would wonder how many of the looters are registered democrats.

Necessity IS a legal defense in a natural emergency. (ie any port in a storm) HOWEVER you are responsible for the restoration costs. IOW you steal food to survive because of storm but you are responsible for repairs and replacement)

You're probably right. I have three uncles that were firemen in the Bronx in the 60's/70's/80's. They told stories of people setting fires to tenements so that once everyone left the building, they would race through and steal what they could. Same mentality ... last one out steals the goods.

Of course, they were also of the "oppressed" group.

They also told stories of snipers in the same neighborhoods that would set the fires to buildings, wait until the firemen arrived, and then would start shooting at the firemen.

Some of the snipers found out that many of the firemen had been to Korea and Nam ... justice was served.

It's also a great opportunity for society to get back at them for their barbaric thievery...full auto.

Frankly I am (was) surprised at how much Convention business they book.

Rampant, inexpensive prostitution and tons of strip clubs.

To be honest with you...these people are bottom feeders. They have no values, no conscience and no moral standards they live by. They think society owes them something. Hmmmm, sounds like a typical damocrat--doesn't it?

Store owner: *Snif* Man, I'm sorry for oppressing you all your life. I realize that running my store has ruined your whole world and caused every bad thing that ever happened to you. What can I do to make it up? Would you please steal all my merchandise? That will certainly fix your pathetic existence, won't it?

This is the time for National Guard automatic weapons to be used mercilessly on the looters.

I thought this was a sophisticated city.

What the heck would have ever made you think that? Folks go there to basically engage in debauchery and drunkeness on vacation..... flash their boobs for .05 beads... what remotely would make you think its a sophisticated city?

Not that it would matter, when order is disrupted, chaos always ensues.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.

"No, " the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."

See ? I told you so...

Yes, all true. I work for an organization that is mainly made up of bankers, so this was really not their scene.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

They feel like "society" has oppressed them all their lives. Probably people that have been on welfare for generations and now they see a chance to steal from people who worked their whole lives.

It is important to understand how people view you. You think you are a hard working taxpayer, they think you are their oppressor because you have more than they do.

Per your post 100:

Spot on. We lived in Slidell for 15 months and we visited N.O. more than a few times. Like any city in the U.S. it has its good element and bad element. Unfortunately, the bad element is what is painting the whole picture for a lot of people. My brother is in N.O. right now and I can assure all FReepers that he is a good, decent, honest person who is watching his home and city be ravaged. It is the a******* who are doing this looting that is making the city look bad, not the good people of N.O.

I am in prayer for the whole area affected by Katrina, and hope everyone else is as well. Our former home of Slidell has been devestated, and it is heartbreaking.
