Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Tonk, see my #848 ... what might that craft be? It looked like a tiny tugboat being pulled by a large pickup truck. I don't think it even needed a wide load warning.

"You work it out. 2,000 school buses"

Would have gotten 80,000 (or more) people out. How many are now trapped in the rising waters? 80,000 (or less). Hmmmm, wonder why noboby thought of that on Sunday.

That's not Stennis. Stennis is in MS, near Bay St. Louis, whihc I hear is almost completely gone.

I have no idea.
there used to be a pair of Navy RO-RO boats across the river from the docks at Jackson.
I'd think, if they are still there, they'd be mobilized for evac.

This is just so sad, isn't it? The very things we discussed would have helped with most of these problems.

And I'm a friggin' amateur. So are most of the folks on FR. Yet we can come up with simple ideas.

Unfortunately, too many folks only know how to say why something cannot be done, instead of just working through it and accomplishing something, even if it only gets you 80 percent there. Because now the evacuation process is much, MUCH more difficult - and the clock is ticking before fresh water runs out and diseases break out.

That would make sense. Those amphibious assault ships could be used for multiple purposes in such a situation. However, I thought she was decommissioned.

WDSU said they talked to a woman who was in that apartment building that collapsed in MS where 30-some people died. She said water kept rising, then pushed all the doors open and swept in, sweeping people out. They just rode the current out of the building and inland. Very sad.

I believe that references the 90 bridge in Bay St. Louis. I've heard that 90 in NOLA is still open to the west.

Hmmmm, wonder why noboby thought of that on Sunday.

Because the time to figure that out and work out the logistics and legalities was twenty years ago.
