Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

The female anchor read from a news report that bodies are spotted floating in the water near the Superbowl.

Superbowl=Super Dome. You're not the first one to make that mistake since Saturday.

Looks like the immediate plan is to drop 3000lb sandbags into the levee break.

Superdome is surrounded by a knee deep moat (3 ft) filled with human waste, gasoline, debris, and red ants!

They would have had to drag me kicking and screaming into the Superdome. Get myself trapped in there? No way.

Red ants and poop? I'll keep my volcano, thank you.

what gets me is in Arizona we have one of the largest per capita ammount of boats in the country. Fat lot of good they are doing here.

The "Grand Strand" in SC competes for the title ... Spitter no doubt meant it as a putdown, but the locals are very proud of the title. Most wouldn't want the likes of Spitter anywhere near their beloved Coast. BTW, is this the same Chris Matthews who last year paid $3-4M for a summer home on Martha's Vineyard so he could hobnob with the Liberal Elite?

Did I hear correctly that the USS Iwo Jima is being mobilized to sail up the river? (From what I understand, they are in Norfolk getting ready to ship out)

With FEMA continually telling us that more people die of floods than of wind, why don't they have boats at their disposal to deliver food, water, and medical help instead of relying on trucks that are useless until roads are open?

FNC: Growing panic in NO.

Water levels still rising? I went to sleep when the downtown area seemed to be safe from flooding and I woke up to hear that they are having problems there now. Martial law, evacuation. Geez.

The first paragraph says: "The Louisiana-based Michoud Assembly Facility, which makes the space shuttle's external fuel tanks, survived the wrath of Hurricane Katrina on Monday with just minor damage, according to initial reports."

Posted 3 hours ago, so it seems to be fairly current.

You think you need X amount of transport and suddenly, you realize you really need Y and Z plus support from ABC.

So you only get 80,000 people out when you needed transport for 100,000.

That's still 80,000 people out of harm's way. You cannot let the possibility of partial failure prevent you from even trying. Unfortunately, that's the mantra of too many governments nowadays.

You know, I don't care about the looting in this instance. These people are in survival mode now. It's going to be survival of the fittest. Natural instinct. Nobody can say what they would do in such a situation. God help them all.

I'm not sure it's survival mode as much as these people feel they can get away with it. Many were doing it yesterday in areas that were not yet flooding. Just a bunch of bad apples. It's probably a thin line between a lack of morality and just trying to survive in this situation. As the flooding get's worse, and people go longer without food, I think you're right...they will be in survival mode.
