Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

They are talking on WWL about the Causeway being completely unscathed. They are mentioning "The Twin Spans" as being heaqvily damaged. Not sure which one that is. I was thinking Greater NO Bridge or Huey P. I rarely went across the lake when I lived down there.

I think that "bridge" might be the causeway across Lake Pontchartrain. Someone correct me....

WWL just now reporting the "causeway bridge" is not damaged. Don't know if this is the same bridge you're talking about or not, I don't know the NO area very well.

One thing struck me as to wierd was the Governor of LA and people in her office keep on talking about the wetlands being restored. They said if there were more wetlands, then the storm surge would be less.

Of course, the gov is a democrat, and I can't tell if this is eco whacko stuff, or if they are correct.

Actually, I think they have just decided to send USS Baatan LHD 5, as on the Status of the Navy webpage its status has been changed to Disaster Relief, Gulf of Mexico.

The last paragraph of your link is prophetic. The body of the article is enlightening. Thanks for posting it.

To try to recreate or rebuild that which cannot ever be again is fruitless. On the other hand,to preserve as much of the old city as a historical site is IMO very worthwhile and should be pursued.

However,to expend blood, sweat, tears and/or any human or financial resources to restore the city,as it was last Sunday morning,is,or would be, a terrible and unconscionable waste.

Giardia takes a long time to kill...

And its not fun if you get it, let me tell you! And there's going to be worse in the water than giardia in that water.

I am not sure - Was that anchor named Rick? And the girl reporter with the Indian sounding name? I saw parts of that. The one man she was interviewing said at least 20 miles of NO was under water. She was getting live coverage of people being rescued on little tiny boats. The woman and photo journalist that Aaron Brown spoke to via phone was heart wrenching.

"I am thinking maybe some ships from Galveston...the passenger cruise ships could go to that area, and they could maybe get boats or helicopters and transfer people to them, and take them to Florida or Texas..."

Now THAT sounds promising, anyone know why this wouldn't work?

Jim Spellman from CNN: hundreds of people looting in downtown NO.

People standing in the street, trying things on to get "the best fit," he said.

This is an LST. The have a very shallow draft and that thing on the front can unfold several hundred yards to become a temporary pier. This is what they need.
