Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I just heard a report about looting of a Walgreens (in addition to the Winn Dixie yesterday) and roving gangs of looters, then in the very next breath, they tell people not to return to their homes.

It would seem looting coverage would drive up the desire to have residents return home to protect what is left of their belongings. Last year in FL, I returned almost immediately to protect home & property.

I'm guessing this will end up a multi-division effort.

For all those people who complained about using our military to aid tsunami victims in Asia - that experience is about to save American lives here. They won't have to learn by doing - they've done it.

15 feet of water in Slidell according to St Tammany Parish EMS guy, per WWL-TV

In that same report, a source at the State Office of Emergency Preparedness said New Orleans would be "uninhabitable for a month".

Sounds like a plan...I haven't done so. I figured when they get the ratings in they'll get the message.

I was up late last night and caught the coverage that Aaron Brown had and even later. CNN had a reporter there and cameraman that were an emotional mess. Traumatized, really. And then this morning when I was getting ready for work I saw Robin Roberts bawling on ABC. Big tears rolling down her face. Now we know why Janice Dean was so obviously upset on Fox when this was approaching. This is just horrible. Horrible.

It's an issue of ENORMOUS importance; repeatedly we've seen people (even politicians) shift blame for their unpreparedness from themseves to the NHC (Andrew, Charley, Katrina) with blatantly false information. First off, I hate to see undeserving people get blame, and Second off, it matters for future storms.

I stopped listening to Shep quite awhile ago....don't like him.

Fox has turned from being an up and coming fair and balanced news source, to making an obvious left-hand turn, when news is covered (with previously noted exceptions) with all tabloid, all the time.

Frankly, FOX disgusts me now.
