Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Have you gotten any word from your folks yet?
Not a single word from anyone. Cried myself to sleep last night worrying, but am trying to keep busy until I start to hear from fly. and friends. Hopefully I'll have a houseful of them in the very near future...
I sure hatd to hear about those levees being breached this morning.
We don't need any help we are the U.S.A.
Didn't Toronto, or the immediate area, have heavy rain & tornado activity late last week?
The Slidell video link in post 20 will not open- too overloaded maybe.
In short, I fear the water will be around for a week or more in that NO bowl.

I cannot get this to open :(

Did your folks evacuate?
Money I can do but having lived through the flooding from Floyd here, I know that food and clothing that were donated to local charities got to victims much faster than stuff from the National Aid organizations (who did a very good job but didn't get here in force until well after the disaster).
I was just wondering if any local organizations needed "stuff", if all they want is money, that is fine too.
They can drain an inch an hour when all the pumps work. Water is entering the bowl at a rate of over 11 inches an hour. Until the breaches are repaired, the pumps could only slow things down.
I am stunned this morning, just seeing this for the first time. I am stunned. These poor poor people. This is worse than I imagined.
This storm will forever change the insurance business. Costs are about to go up, alot.
So let's talk about where to donate.
Red Cross has the biggest presence, but I don't trust them too much since 9/11 business.
I usually trust the Salvation Army, but this link says they're going to send in canteens...now how is that going to happen.

Anybody hear of other agencies in the city at this time.
Orange Beach is fine. Talked to a friend's parents in Wolf Bay yesterday. They had a bit of water, some erosion, but nothing major - relatively speaking. I've heard that areas of Baldwin more inland got it worse - paradoxically. Wolf Bay and further up the eastern shore apparently got a large surge.
FEMA guy on MSNBC saying he just heard from Hancock County MS that they're finding bodies in trees, have ambulance crews missing there as well.
Water will be crucial and in short supply which is why we bought it yesterday. $$ will be needed too and we intend to donate, but by the time the checks clear the banks and someone goes to buy what's needed, a lot of time has passed.
Right now the Salvation Army is organizing to get food, water and clothing down there by truck. We're in the south and this won't take very long to get to those people at all.
