...President Bush unfurled a strong defense today of his belief in strict border enforcement...

"I understand the issue well as the [former] governor of a border state," Bush told residents of a retirement RV park in El Mirage, Ariz. .

...Bush said that from his time as the governor of Texas, "I know what it means to have a long border with Mexico. And I understand the solemn obligation of the state government and the federal government to enforce our border."

...Referring to the problems caused by illegal immigration, he said, "I understand it's putting a strain on your resources."

And emphasizing efforts by the U.S. government, which he said may not have come to the attention of his audience, the president said that "hundreds of thousands of people have been detained, trying to illegally cross into Arizona."

President Bush finally speaks from a long absence of silence on this subject, no mention of a guest amnesty program this time. But note he doesn’t say illegal immigration is problem but is it an issue (meaning it is an issue with greedy business donors and how to attract voters of an emerging demographic?).

He doesn’t say that state governments and the federal governments were failing to enforce our border, but he did say hundreds of thousands of people have been detained.

OK so if hundreds of thousands of people have been detained and most people who are paying the slightest attention to this subject have recognized that hundreds of thousands is just a fraction of those who got through and most of the detainees will eventually return, how could any body believe these remarks are anything less than a catastrophic failure by both the state and federal governments to enforce a real boarder?

Furthermore, why is it the staes the border Mexico, only those with democratic governors have called a state of emergency, the only two republican governors on the border, California and Texas have been ominously quite? And not to praise the democrats, either Arizona or New Mexico have not called out the National Guard, a necessary step for a state of emergency yet they the don’t feel a bit shy about accepting emergency funds to spend more money on failed policies.

Good. Then perhaps he'll start funding The Minutemen instead of referring to them as "vigilantes"??

Or is this just more hollow rhetoric?

It is time for the federal government to s*it or get off of the pot regarding the illegal immigrant issue.

This is more "tell them what they want to hear while we do what we want to do." Politicians from both parties are using illegals to conceal the depreciating value of the dollar due to too much borrowing/spending/printing by pandering politicians for the leeches they serve.

They can't. They are CONSTIPATED from having to choose between their big business and foreign masters, and the people who voted them in office.

I guess then that they really need a moving experience in 2006 and 2008.

And I understand the solemn obligation of the state government and the federal government to enforce our border.

Considering what Israel and even Mexico do to "enforce" their own borders, would you admit that we, the lone Super Power and largest economy in the world, aren't doing all we can or could to enforce our own borders, Mr. President??

I doubt that'll help. If that happens, the party elite will just get it in their fool heads that they lost because weren't liberal enough.

Mr. President, tear down the wall (between border patrol and local police). If the federal government isn't going to do the job, let the states have the authority to take care of the problem.

Unfortunately, I believe that you are correct. Over a period of years I have seen the pendulum swing severly from one side to another. What is needed is a government that puts America and the Americans first. Enough already to catering to the special interest groups and big business that touts and imports labor at slave rates.

Government funding will put the government in charge of the MMP, when that happens I no longer participate, I'll take the name calling over government control.

The border issue is one of the items which makes Bush merely a "good" president versus a great president. I don't understand why his policy is so weak. I just moved East due to the ongoing invasion.

And something which IS NOT lost on this audience, hundreds of thousands of Criminal Aliens have successfully crossed the border and invaded Arizona.

Mr. President, I love ya. But you really need to wake up on this one.

In 4-1/2 years, PresBush has done nothing to properly address the issue of immigration reform. Illegal aliens continue to cross the border and burden the taxpayers by straining a significant portion of our nations infrastructure. I have no confidence Bush or the GOP controlled Congress wants to tackle this issue. Bush wants Hispanic's to vote Republican, while the business community continues to get cheap labor. How pathetic. Bush gets an "F" for failure.

Your boy John Campbell is just more of the same empty rhetoric. Sorry...

I want elected leaders who know what 'action' means.

This administration doesnt get it...period! He is as clueless as his Dad was on domestic policies. I mean his dad failed to understand we were in a economic slowdown and simply sat on his hands and did not even have the know how to get up and say so and that it would be slight and would pass quikly. Both are excellent in foreign policy..except in their own backyard. Pure brain dead when it comes to domestic issues and what the people want/need to hear.

This man and his party lost all my respect when he got up and said the minutemen were vigilanties..I bet he thinks the original minutement were the same? What the hell? Those men carried firearms and started the war that made it possible for GW to run for the possition he is in..and then to go compare a group of men and women who want to protect our borders from terrorist and what not coming across, compare them to vigilanties?

Government funding of NPR doesn't put the government in charge of NPR, now does it?

I don't understand why his policy is so weak.

I think the weakness on this particular issue originates from Rove's office, to be quite candid.

Take a cue from Israel on how to do it right Mr. President. Your talk is as cheap as our fence!
