I saw the report on this last night
The Aquarium in an older building and there was concern that it could collapse in a Cat. 5 Hurricane .. so the keepers put them in the pool because it was a safer place for them

A Studebaker Weasel . Noticed the skis on top. It must go much faster thru the water than I thought. Imagine, pulling skiers. :)

I know this will sound a tad selfish, but I'm looking for Metairie-specific photos, if they are available.
My brother is with me right now and he lives near Power Blvd. and I-10 and is wondering if he has a house worth going back to now that the storm has passed.

Coolbeans.
So they aren't truly in any awful danger from the pool.

"At least I have a dry place to sleep, with no alligators!"
A 12' gator was at the end of my driveway this evening. The large ones got that way from learning early on who was the top predator, so they are usually not a problem.
The little ones, say 5' to 6' are more often in need of some aversive conditioning.
New Orleans isn't likely to have any gator problems I should suppose. There are lots of them in Lousiana, but not inside the city area, I hope.

Sorry I missed the ping. Two more pictures from Biloxi:
David Diaz looks at the area where he and his brother used to live in the Sadler Apartments on the waterfront in Biloxi, Mississippi, August 29, 2005. The pile of rubble and empty foundations are what is left of 30 or more apartments and more than 100 of the St. Charles Condominiums. Hurricane Katrina ripped into the U.S. Gulf Coast on Monday, stranding people on rooftops as it pummeled the historic jazz city New Orleans with 100 mph (160 kph) winds and swamped Mississippi resort towns and lowlands with a crushing surge of seawater.

Gulfport Mississippi police officer Jason Payne gets into his patrol car as Hurricane Katrina continues to rage at the Thomasville Apartments in Biloxi August 29, 2005 after officers rescued a woman trapped in the rubble of a fallen brick wall that crashed through her roof (background), breaking several bones. Several buildings were heavily damaged as the brick siding on most of the buildings collapsed during the peak of the category four storm. The storm slammed into New Orleans on Monday with winds of 135 mph (216 kph), shutting 91 percent of the normal 1.5 million barrels per day of crude oil production in the Gulf Coast region. (

People were telling me yesterday that I was crazy to think the dome roof would be suspect. The largest open span at 680 feet across built 30 years ago and with repairs, maintenance and new skin since.
Glad it held up as well as it did. Prayers to all.

And listening to Haley Barbour on TV, I think some really, really bad news is coming out of Mississippi. Yes. We have yet to hear much from the Alabama / Mississippi coastal areas. Although, I liked Gov. Barbour's comment today, that looters would be treated "ruthlessly". That kind of tough talk is surely missed lacking by modern political officials. Anyone who takes advantage of this situation should have their heads cracked with nightsticks wielded by old fashioned, 1930's era, 250 lb Irish NYC cops.

So they aren't truly in any awful danger from the pool. No .. they have done this with other big hurricanes
They were concerned for the safety of the dolphins
Apparently years back .. can't remember which hurricane .. but a large wall had collapsed
