Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

REFLECTIVE OF NEAR ZERO SHEAR.

There is nothing out there to influence this "lady", Katrina. She is eating up the atmosphere like one of a kind, on her own, and going her own indiscriminate and selfish way.

Tell us northerners what Contraflow is please. I assume it's traffic directed to go in only one direction, in this case OUT of NO. Is that correct?

Yes, it's designating both sides of the highway to go in the same direction. For example, both northbound and southbound lanes are designated northbound, to get everyone out of the city.

Thanks!

Vortex says 160 knots, which is 184 MPH. By the way MB is millbars (pressure).

Sorry to be a dunce, can someone explain to me what "902MB" means? Thanks.

Millibars. It is a measure of atmosphereic pressure. The lower the pressure, the worse the storm, if I understand correctly.

TWC says pressure has dropped to 902 mb.

Can you explain to me what this means? What do you mean by pressure dropping to 902 mb?

Contraflow is using both sides of a divided highway(usually) to both go one way. All lanes are outbound, for instance. They do it in Florida in emergency, get more people out of the area.

Being on the Georgia coast and having the good fortune to dodge all these hurricanes time after time, my heart goes out to all those people and the certain devastation they face in the next 24 hours. I have always read about Camille ( I wasn't born when it hit ) and I am so sick to see it about to be repeated. I don't really think that I have ever seen a hurricane of this magnitude in my lifetime. But for the grace of God go I .....

So you think we are going to see 180 to 190 miles per hour winds?

THey are about to see Camille wiped from the record books.

I never thought I'd see another storm of that magnitude in my lifetime. But it sure looks like it.

I think she has a very good shot of going sub 900... already the strongest hurricane since records began in the GOM now. 180-190 sustained is possible, but I think we are starting to near theoretical limits with strength.
