Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

I think as soon as they started saying evacuate they should have been gotten busses and sending those with no transportation OUT - at least offering it.

Maybe a fair amount would have gone...

It really is a nightmare isn't it?

They just said 10,000 people waiting outside the dome to get in.

Words fail me.

Saying it's accelerating. It is the 4th largest storm ever in the Atlantic basin.

I have a 400 gal. propane tank for heating over the winter -- I plan to call for a refill first thing in the morning.

I pray the miracle occurs...but if I were in its path I would already be over in Houston or Mobile.

So do we. But with 90 degree water ahead, it is likely to persist or grow even stronger. And after it does diminish, it will drop its load of water inland along the way north. People all the way up the projected path should be moving out of the valleys.

I've got a bad feeling about the Dome. Because of the curvature of the exterior I believe that a lateral 175 mph+ wind will lift the roof right off. Doomed structure.

You may be right.

BTW, someone made a Freudian slip earlier today and referred to the it as "The Superdoom".

I dread the day we get a storm near this magnitude.
There are so many here that have never experienced a hurricane.

And so much new development all along the coast.

Why can't those people get into the Dome?

If this was a ball game they would have had those folks in already.

Is there a screening process going on as they enter?
