The Superdome will quickly become a disaster area when the juice goes out.

I fear you're right.

People need to realize that no matter where this hits a lot of people are going to die. We don't need to be praying that it misses one town or the other, we need to be praying that the bottom falls out and she hits as a Cat 2 or 3.

Maybe you can get a mod to add that to the title of the thread--"no graphics please"

No large graphics; but there is nothing wrong with normal size graphics, imo. The one with the anomation is what needs to not be on the thread.

I hope and pray people needing special needs did register! In Pinellas County FL, not many people registered with their fire departments. Only 40 in my city!

They have a backup system for that; they won't work submerged.

Thanks. Just found this on Wikipedia:

Overall, the Louisiana Superdome has withstood the test of time; it has a surprisingly undated look to it, even as fixed domed stadium construction began to fade in the early 1990s and others having even been closed. The Superdome is built to withstand catastrophes; the roof is built to stand up to 200 MPH wind and even deep flood water wouldn't reach the second level 35 feet from the ground. It has thus been used as an emergency shelter but is not designed for the task; in 1998 during Hurricane Georges problems included looting and supplying 14,000 people with necessities.

Some of our relatives live in a house just a few feet from one of the levees. They're up in Baton Rouge right now, staying with other relatives. I hope it's far enough away. And I hope they took everything of importance (papers, family pics etc.) with them, because I fear their house won't be there when they get back.

Yup. That is my call. When you see a tragedy in the making, with the ball being dropped, you act decisively. The Prez can declare martial law, and put the national wheels in motion.

FoxNews showed Gulfport area. People retrieving flags that apparently fly along a highway. [Live shot showed the wind really blowing the flags.]

...NHC says 215 gusts...

Is that knots or MPH?

215 kts equals 247 MPH

The mayor said the SuperDome can stand 200 mh winds.

Gusts are already measured at 215mph inside Katrina. And she's expected to strengthen. The SuperDome may suffer extreme damage. I wouldn't want to be in there or in any building in New Orleans right now. Even the hotels which are exempt from the mandatory evacuation can't be safe.

Where is Jefferson Parish in relation to New Orleans?

JP is adjacent to Orleans Parish on OP's west side. JP is bounded on the north by the Lake, Miss. River runs through it; JP bounded on the south by Gulf (Grand Isle is located in extreme south JP). Much of what "foreigners" consider New Orleans is in Jefferson (Metairie and Kenner); populated by white flight from Orleans.
