Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Fox news is contemplating if President Bush will release oil from the national reserve. I am kind of thinking...We already had problems with not having enough refineries. If the refineries go down as well as the oil deliveries then what good would more raw oil do us ?

I think hebrew was making a point, maybe. If you remember the last hurricanes that hit the east coast were called "storm of the century", "killer hurricane"...etc. The news media has called 'chicken' soooo many times regarding these hurricanes.

This one does seem to look deadly and I fear for the safety of the peoople in the Gulf.

But if I woke up and the hurricane was a cat. 1 and did min. damage, would I be surprised...NO.

Just wanted to post what I think hebrew was trying to say.

Best to all.

If I remeber right, the frame on that building in FW was twisted and it ultimately had to be torn down.

The guy Shep was talking to says Katrina will weaken to a 3 and hit west of NO.....Shep was just stunned.....made Bastardi confirm how dangerous Katrina is. Clueless people will just have to drown to believe it.

My niece left Slidell with hubby, 2 kids and dog. She took all the pics from the frames and packed the picture albums. And remembered her insurance papers. Bless her heart....they are safe but she's positive that her house will be gone.

MSNBC had life feed from local stations in NO for a few minutes. I wish our cable stations would allow more of that, as it was very interesting.

The Keys hurricane of 1935 did have the lowest barometric pressure of any recorded over land in the US, it was 26.35 inches or 892 millibars. Here is a link

At 902, we are getting in range -- but I doubt it this time. The keys are mostly over water. Metacumbe Key is only few miles wide.

Hey Shep! Get out of the way and maybe they'll believe you when you tell them to get out of the way.

Stellar point. With a lack of other information, that would be my reaction too. 'If it's so deadly, what the hell are you doing here'? Perhaps as a newsjock Shep is thinking he'd may as well get the biggest story of the century or die trying. Or maybe he thinks it's media hype too.

The Super Dome was built knowing that a CAT 5 storm would come. Almost all commercial building such as those in the downtown area (not the quarter) will not even notice a CAT 5 storm. A few windows will break, but thats all.

The National Weather Service diaagrees with you:

HIGH RISE OFFICE AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS WILL SWAY DANGEROUSLY...A FEW TO THE POINT OF TOTAL COLLAPSE. ALL WINDOWS WILL BLOW OUT.

I have spent hours on the phone trying to talk people into leaving before it is too late, most do not comply and you hope for the best. We always told these stubborn, clueless people to make sure you have I.D. on your body that floats and is waterproof so your family can recover your remains from the bodies at the morgue. I am so glad that I am retired from that emotional roller coaster job.
