Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

he better get a few Daquiris to go, he'll need them when he's looking around the superdome for a functioning bathroom with 100,000 other people.

Bastardi on FNC needs a tranq. His advice is great, but he needs to take some deep breaths.

The light. No place has light quite like New Orleans.

Memories. The Rault Center fire. They brought the bodies of the jumpers down through my mom's office building. The World's fair, and a wonderful day in City park having a crawfish boil while watching the fireworks for the fair in the distance. The Zephyr. Standing on Canal Street on Mardi Gras Day wearing a boy clown costume, my mom dressed likewise, my dad and brother dressed like girl clowns - long before such a thing would be a political statement. It was just fun.

Walking through Jackson square before they outlawed glass bottles and closed the park during Mardi gras, and stepping through ankle deep wine and beer bottles.

The taste of fresh shrimp. Reading Confederacy of Dunces and the Movie Goer and knowing all the places. Missing DH Holmes on Canal Street. The Pitt theater, and the first time I saw It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with my dad, and the first time I saw Plan Nine from Outer Space with my college friends. The Popcorn tasted the same...both times.

Sigh.

You're braver than me.

I'll admit it: I 'm a weenie who wouldn't live with earthquakes and who runs from hurricanes.

Prayer thread here.
I have a rosary cd on, to keep my easily distracted mind on track. So many people need our prayers now.

That is exactly who the majority of them are. This may turn out to be a very tragic story. I think a lot of people went there without thinking this hurricane would keep going thru FLA and get there. The airlines backed out EARLY and they have no way out. No rental cars available either.

That Joe Bastardi from Accu weather on Fox just put into the strongest terms why this storm is different from any other. He's really sure that it's going to cause massive damage.

Shep is talking about the fact that people don't believe the media on storms anymore because it's all hype.
