Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

I certainly hope you don't think I am blaming the president in any way for this lack of planning.

No No NO, not at all.

I KNOW who's side you're on Peach,LOL.

I'm just wondering how the MSM will try to tarnish Bush over an act of nature? I'm pretty sure they'll find an angle to try to do just that, sadly.

Reports of post-storm help massing in region, but how do they get to NO? The city is surrounded by bridges, LOTS of bridges. Remember I-10 in Pensacola Bay? The odds are great that many bridges & causeways will fail, severely limiting access to the area.

I can't even imagine swimming in 63-degree water. Talk about shrinkage! Ow!

I went to Pensacola in August several years ago and the water temp was 91 degrees. It wasn't in the least bit refreshing; the air temp was 95+ and there was massive humidity, but getting in that 91-degree water didn't do a thing to cool me off!

A nice low-80s swimming pool or beach dip on a blistering hot day is a little slice of heaven, but 60 degrees? I'd pretty much have to be on fire before I'd jump in that!

Heard Shepard Smith was enroute to New Orleans, for what it is worth. His exagerations can make me crazy, however, maybe there is not the possibility of exageration in regard to Katrina.

That is not good, more time for people to venture out while the eye is overhead and get caught .

NO is a state of mind, y'all.

Even if the bricks and mortar are destroyed, it will be rebuilt. Folks will pick up the pieces and go on.

WWL Ch. 4 just did a segment from a church downtown. Many parishioners have left, but some were there, along with their priest. The reporter asked the priest if he was scared (duh! silly question.) The priest gave a little tiny smile and a tilt of his head and said, "Yes. Yes, I'm scared. Yes. But we are all in God's hands."

gas prices....they might go down due to less use in the affected area.

Oh, surely you jest? Here's 5 cents (my maximum bet) that says gas prices will rise tomorrow. If a princeling in Saudi sneezes, up they go. If a processing plant has a power outage, up they go, that same day! Any excuse the suppliers can use, they will. Has no one noticed that all the big gas companies posted record earnings this year? Supply and demand my foot! Let the drilling in Alaska begin!

much money FEMA/Homeland Security has funneled to local and state governments around the country

That money is for Gov't jobs, benefits and Democrat votes. Not for preparedness and citizen help. They can't even get basic thingsa highway artery roots, right. You saw the pix: 12 lanes of highway. 11 wide open, and 1...a parking lot. Oh, and from other posts here, all the criminals are out of harm's way, judging from the empty prisoner busses returning south.

Someone made the decision that the underclass was expendable.

The issue is that the underclass has rights. Every mayor has been frustrated that their planning sessions are legal consultations, where lawyers are telling the politicians what is legal and what is not legal. Many parishes couldn't declare mandatory evacuations because of possible court challenges.

The legal framework is broken and needs to be fixed. Lives will be lost because some person looking out for civil liberties has tied the hands of officials. And of course, once this is all done with, those lawyers will also come in and sue cities and parishes for not doing enough.

I'm praying for this beast to swing dramatically east.

Hard to fathom the force of this hurricane.

A huge wall of water with sustained winds for hours at the speed of NASCAR races.

I didn't hear her say what song, but I can hear it as clear as a bell, ya know ... ?

She said it sounded like a single horn in the distance flowing through the streets, and the song was Amazing Grace.

Insurance?

That's another thing - will insurance pay if this is determined to be "flood" as opposed to "wind"? Any insurance agents on board?
