Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.
Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

OMG - praying hard from Canada for all you folks near the Gulf.
I'm not advising anyone - however, I suspect I am as qualified (or better stated - as unqualified) as you to make predictions:) This being said - just as I can't say it will, you are not in a position to say it won't.
Didn't see that. Sorry, I forget dialup.
I haven't heard that, but even if that happens, it won't make a difference; the winds on the back side will push the lake water into NO.
OMG!!!
From the old thread.....
No, not Algiers. Near and East of the Industrial Canal towards Chalmette.....the other side of the river from Algiers.
Mercy Hospital is where I was born. Hotel Dieu? See? That is "uptown!" :-)
How chilling.
yup , a teaching veterinarian once told me that the low barometric #'s trigger a primal instinct to get to higher ground,... even before the storm arrives
How many left in the bowl?
The Dome is reinforced concrete; I don't know what the wind-specs are on it, but I would suspect that it'll survive. The catch is that the floor of the Dome is at street level. The floor of the Dome will flood in this storm.
I don't think I've read anything more frightening than that.
I never liked crossing the Causeway for that very reason. If anything happens to the bridge, and you're in the middle of it, you've got an eleven mile swim in either direction.

Look Out for Snakes in Strange Places!
Now that the storm is over, we have other problems to deal with...snakes! Flooding caused by Hurricane Ivan may drive some snakes to seek shelter above water level in buildings, cars and other areas where they are not normally found. ....

Thank you--I thought I recalled it being fabric or plastic when it was built (yes, I was living there at the time), but that was a long time ago and I might be remembering incorrectly.
and the winds 200 feet above the ground will be even higher then at the surface
"Look for significant increases in gasoline, heating fuel, natural gas prices."
And don't look for the government to do anything about it (like, um, reduce some of their cut from each gallon...). :-<
