Katrina is emerging into the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico early this morning after making landfall in SE Florida, then tracking SW. Thus far, she is well ahead of schedule, leaving at least four fatalities in her wake, and well over 1 million without electricity.

We are just getting ready for the storm, been tying down everything in the yard, using water hoses, rope, you name it. Needless to say we are glued to the tv.

Just heard a casino spokesman for one of the Biloxi casinos say on the weather channe; that they're fixing to shut down at 4:00AM. Isn't THAT something?

This huricane is so huge cause it appears to have two eyes! And it's pull is so strong you can see in this photo how it's pulling in clouds(strength) from the Atlantic ocean and even on the other side of Mexico!! IMO, people in New Orleans NEED to evacuate now. Your supplies won't last the time it will take for the water to go down and electricity to be repaired, etc,.

Sure, that is what I will do, bring the chickens in AND I will stay in the chicken coop as she will throw ME out.

We are stocked up pretty well, 6 bags of ice, going to fill the tub with water tomorrow, lots of batteries and food, going to fix a lot of sandwiches for the crowd that will be here, etc. Will make sure the generator is running tomorrow. SIL has started boarding the windows this afternoon.

I have your cell phone # and will keep in touch with you and hubby.

I'm checking in from Ft Lauderdale, I just got my Internet access back. Most still have no electricity here.

This power of Katrina took everyone by surprise here. I'd say about 20% of eastern Broward county has been defoliated,tens of thousands of downed trees, with minimal structural damage. Everyone here learned a good lesson: a "weak hurricane" is an oxymoron.

I spent a few hours driving around today, I'm impressed with the way people were driving without working traffic signals. Ft Lauderdale is a heavy traffic area with a lot of 6 lane streets. The "treat a broken signal as a 4 way stop rule" was mostly ignored but any person trying to enter or turn left across lanes was immediately let through because people actually all stopped. I'm still blown away how well traffic flowed with no signals.

We'll survive here, good luck to whoever gets her next........

We are fine here in MIA (Perrine area), now have power again, thankfully (though most of the neighbors don't). No damage to home, but an impressive yard cleanup needed. Lots of trees down in the neighborhood, but that's about it in terms of damage.

I live on a rocky ridge, so flooding here was nonexistent except for a few impressive pockets in small low areas.

Prayers for the folks on the Gulf coast.

Toby, I know y'all want to ride it out at home, but listen, this is a CAT 5 right now isn't it? The hotels here and even the motels are selling our fast.

You do have my cell number and if you change your mind about staying put, you call me. This is a 5 bedroom house, (not all furnished) but hey, we have room for y'all here. We'll be at Floyd's auction this afternoon, and I will have cell phone with me.
