Volvo testing ways to stop drunk drivers (built-in breathalyzer)
Washington Times ^ | Aug. 24, 2005 | UPI

Posted on 08/24/2005 12:11:26 PM PDT by QQQQQ

The Swedish unit of U.S. carmaker Ford Motor Co. is experimenting with a built-in breathalyzer and speed governor to reduce road accidents.

The breathalyzer is part of the seat belt mechanism, and before the car will start, the driver must blow below .08 percent or less with the belt buckled.

The test vehicle also is equipped with a special set of ignition keys that can be programmed to limit the car to preset speeds, which would enable parents to have control over inexperienced teenagers.

Why doesn't Volvo make their cars really safe by selling them without engines

The people who get into a car and drive drunk, and I don't mean those at .08 or .10 but really over the limit, are not at all likely to use the thing and are motivated to find ways to disconnect it. Should such a device ever be mandated. Those who care to watch their limit or drive responsibly will consider using it, but they are already driving responsibly. I'm sure that bypasses or hacks will quickly become available to disconnect the device or trick the readings for individuals interested in overriding it.

"If parents would TEACH their kids to act responsibly..."

But who will teach the parents? This is the day and age that no one is responsible for their own actions.

Obviously, this is not for the Swedish market because the peer pressure alone here keeps you from stepping behind the wheel after only ONE drink. (Experience talking.)

I'd guess that there kids are working on a little pump that blows fresh air into the breathalyzeras we speak. Shaped like an ordinary pen, it will go into the glove compartment so it's always handy.

Next year...Made in China $4.99 at Walmart

"Who in their right mind would buy this car?"

No one, in other words, the same people who buy new GMs.

My concern is that if Volvo makes such a car, the US government will mandate that all cars should have it.

Probably not. The government wants you to drive drunk so they can bust you.

Source, you say?

There used to be a country-music playing dive that I would frequent in the 70s. The proprietor got ahold of a coin-operated breathalyzer and the patrons could check themselves during the evening to insure that they didn't exceed .08% BAC. The state got wind of it and confiscated it.

The thinking was that DUI revenue to the county dropped precipitously after the bar installed the breathalyzer.

Couldn't have that, y'know.

"and I have great confidence in that fine looking scissors jack that I'd allow him to get under the car using it."

Not only that it looks like he has it placed right under the gas tank... Can you say Darwin candidate...

I friend witnessed a drunk with a blow-stop device on his car (installed as condition of DUI diversion)paying a teenager $10 to blow for him so he could start his car. My buddy walks up and tells the guy to get a cab or he's calling the cops, the dude decks him and takes off. My friend calls the cops and the guy is picked up minutes later, given a DUI and a charge for assault and battery.

I have great confidence in that fine looking scissors jack that I'd allow him to get under the car using it.

That rusty one in the photo? Yea, and there is no need for tire blocks either because if the car rolls off the jack it will still be supported by the blockhead.

I don't know. It doesn't sound foolproof, though.

I do know all anyone would have to do after a few beers would be to bit into a garlic clove a few times, or have a big steamin' hot bowl of Korean 'kimchee chige' and no way would that 'breathalizer' pick up the scent of the sauce.

My parents would have had no luck with this car.

Maybe if they had a THC-alyzer....., but if they put one of those in, the damn thing would have never started at all between the time I was 16 and 19.
