Televangelist calls for Chavez' death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a "terrific danger" to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on "The 700 Club" it was the United States' duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a "launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism."

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson said. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela's total exports.

Venezuela's government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan "terrorists" in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said.

"We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator," he continued. "It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

What would Jesus do,...?

According to the book of Revelation, upon Christ's imminent return, the nations will attempt to make war against Him, at which point He will destroy them all, with a vengeance.

What DID Jesus do?

During Christ's first advent, He arrived as a sacrificial Lamb, in order to reconcile man with God, thus ending the enmity that separated us.

Chavez is a self-proclaimed fierce enemy. He is cooperating with China and other Communist states toward our downfall.

That's sufficient, for me.

I completely agree with Robertson on this issue and I hope we actually do it soon.

I agree. Chavez is a first class troublemaker to US interests. And while we're at it, knock off Fidel too.

If you are planning an assassination of a scumbag like Chavez, you certainly do not go around publicizing the plan. The publicity will damage your side much more than the tactical gain of eliminating the enemy.

Maybe, maybe not. A guy like Chavez is a paranoid creature by design. Anything that increases his paranoia could help destabilizing the regime, especially if he starts suspecting all those around him.

This is not to say that Robertson was acting on behalf of the administration by broadcasting this "hope." But stranger things have happened...

Well, I think Mr. Pat should be the one to volunteer, go do it himself, put his soul in the balance.

Frankly, I've never found much I didn't agree with P.R. on and I think he would have really cleaned House in D.C. if he had been given the chance.

Ditto. But I think P.R. would have been a better fit for most folks in 1776, then 2005. ;^)

I agree.

This is an incredibly stupid, thoughtless statement. Hugo Chavez is absolute garbage, but this bone-headed statement by Robertson only feeds into a perception of us in that part of the world that Chavez knows how to exploit.

Leave it to someone in the Latin American world to travel down the road of political nostalgia by resurrecting radical chic in the form of Castro worship. Castro is what he is today only because the Soviet Union needed mercenary soldiers and a toe-hold in the Americas. The U.S. should do to Chavez what it should have done long ago to Castro. The world would have been far better off with a Cuba that was the world's largest offshore casino and whore house than what it got by Kennedy blinking in his confrontation with the USSR.

(here it is Pat: as a policy, we don't).

I think there was a reversal of that policy (which came through a presidential finding) by another presidential finding.

Sure I could. I'm content to let sleeping dogs lie. Those with good memories know what I'm talking about.

So you can't prove it. Figures.

Merely agreeing with one's statement isnt directly calling for it. Nice try though.

I'm not in agreement with you, Pat Robertson, or Chavez. Now that that is out of the way, what's your problem?
