'Christian' Pat Robertson calls for the assassination of Venezuela's President Chavez
Vheadline.com ^ | 8/22/05 | staff

hristian Broadcasting Network's The 700 Club host Pat Robertson ... founder of the Christian Coalition of America has called for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias.

In a direct transcript of his August 22 The 700 Club broadcast Robertson clearly says:

There was a popular coup that overthrew him [Chavez]. And what did the United States State Department do about it? Virtually nothing. And as a result, within about 48 hours that coup was broken; Chavez was back in power, but we had a chance to move in. He has destroyed the Venezuelan economy, and he's going to make that a launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism all over the continent.

You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it.

It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don't think any oil shipments will stop. But this man is a terrific danger and the United ... this is in our sphere of influence, so we can't let this happen.

We have the Monroe Doctrine, we have other doctrines that we have announced. And without question, this is a dangerous enemy to our south, controlling a huge pool of oil, that could hurt us very badly.

We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability.

We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.

Your out of line. I asked a relatively minor question which commanded only a small answer and what I got was BS about the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Remember what Ross Perot always said, "the Devil is in the details" ~ well, there's a corollary to that ~ pump out enough stuff and you can turn even a relatively insignificant tale into a cause of war.

Now, concerning abortion, have all the Bishops in the United States refused communion to Teddy Kennedy?

what I got was BS about the Austro-Hungarian Empire

(1) You received no BS.

(2) You got much more than just info on the A-H Empire.

(3) Getting the facts straight is important.

have all the Bishops in the United States refused communion to Teddy Kennedy

The question you're really asking is: are all US bishops doing their jobs properly?

The answer is no - there are plenty of slackers.

the Italians were 95% Catholic

The fact that almost 35% of Italians self-identified as Communists in that time period would suggest that at most 65% of Italians were Catholic.

Catholics were a minority in Germany.

Not just the 35% who claimed to be Commies, many of the fascists were equally disinterested in religious matters.

The error here is for Americans to evaluate Italians in Italy against the standards of Italians in America.

They are not the same~!

Your out of line. I asked a relatively minor question

BTW, you asked no questions.

You asserted the following two falsehoods:

(1) Catholics cannot excommunicate themselves.

They most certainly can.

(2) Hitler died a Roman Catholic.

He most certainly did not. At the time of his death he had been an excommunicant for at least 34 years and had not attended a Mass in 42 years.

Calling Hitler a Catholic is like calling Stalin an Orthodox Christian, or Trotsky an Orthodox Jew or Rudolf Hess a Lutheran.

All four had deliberately rejected and turned their backs on their parents' religion and embraced ideologies that were implacably opposed to their parents' religion.

You told two lies and you got called on them.

you were the one who was way out of line.

Send in a covert force to ARREST Hugo Chavez and bring him to trial in a US Court if he's committed crimes against Americans.

Send in a covert force to arrest Chavez?

What happens if he resists or if he has armed guards who start shooting? You end up with more people KILLED.

Just take him out, sniper, long range, one shot, one kill.

You are probably more qualified to decide what it is appropriate for a preacher to advocate than I am, as I'm very agnostic- though I hold out hope there's something beyond.

My point is: for that reason, I'm not interested in whether a preacher should say such things- I'm only interested in whether or not he's right. From my perspective men of the cloth are not disallowed by their vocation from saying controversial things that are right, nor are they permitted to wrap themselves in a cloak of moral authority to deflect criticism when they're wrong.

I heard Bill O'Reilly lamenting Robertson's intrusion into
the realm of reality (or geopolitics, if that's more polite) by saying something to the effect that Jesus wasn't walking around advocating assassinations, and that if Jesus wanted Chavez dead, he could turn out the guy's lights in a split-second. Sadly, Jesus doesn't have a very impressive record of doing so. I won't insult anyone's intelligence by listing all the dictators Jesus has failed to 86 before they wreaked unimaginable horror on mankind. I will point out that the U.S. military has been rather more proactive. And the elimination of evil has obviously been the duty of Man since time immemorial.

So, is Robertson right? I think he probably is, although IF he is, he just eliminated the possibility that U.S. Special OPS would try it now. A ten-ton weight dropping comically onto Chavez's head at his next Commie rally would be seen by the entire world as a U.S. action.

Dear Pat, shut the hell.... I mean heck...up.

You are taking a view that does not presently seem to be shared by the Catholic church (as a practical matter). There are all sorts of folks out there who no doubt should be ex-communicants, but who are not, and this in spite of the fact their own local bishops know all about it. (I am not suggesting people be held responsible for behavior they don't know about).

Assuming the same standards applied in Deutschland in the 1930s as applied here, my assertion must be taken as a question ~ namely, where's the evidence that Hitler was actually excommunicated? Or, was he simply dealt with the same way people like Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, and others of that sort are dealt with ~ kid gloves, and not even a tap on the fingers?

It's not like this isn't obvious to outsiders ~ and if our "assumptions" based on what we see are not consistent with what you claim to be church law, then what are we to think?

Look, my own church had a problem with a guy named Jim Jones who was an ordained minister. He ended up convincing his congregation to drink poisoned koolaid ~ hence the origin of that ideomatic expression. His behavior had gotten out of whack even when he still resided in Indianapolis, and they should have pulled his license at that time. However, "they" (meaning Disciples of Christ authorities) didn't, and ended up with egg on their face. They lost a substantial percentage of their members over that little piece of stupidity.

Still, Jim Jones is not a "smear" on DoC. Having Adolph Hitler as an unbidden member of your church is no smear on the Catholic church either.

In both cases, though, failure of church administrative/ecclesiastical authorities to take affirmative and public action to kick these jerks out certainly is blameworthy provided that such actions would have provided any benefit to the other members, and to humanity in general.

This remark is the smartest thing that I've heard since the Israelis starting hanging targets on Gaza terrorists. The U.S. needs to identify its enemies, hang a target on them and get rid of them. If next in line were found to be as big or bigger of a problem, hang another target. Let the Delta Team take care of it. Why send 130,000 men when a few dozen would do just fine? This is a low cost way to implement regime change. The only reason an elected official would block this strategy is because it would make them a target and expose their cowardliness.

There ARE diamond mines in Venezuela.

OK, I take it Pat doesn't own any stock in the companies that mine diamonds & gold in Venezuela like he did with Liberia
