SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Phil Mickelson delivered another dramatic finish in a major on Monday, flopping a chip out of deep rough to 2 feet for a birdie on the final hole and a one-shot victory in the PGA Championship.
The putt wasn't nearly as long as his 18-footer to win the Masters last year, and there was no need to jump for joy this time.
Still, it was a sweet conclusion to a major championship season that had gone sour until he put together his best golf of the summer stretched over five days at Baltusrol by a storm-delayed final round.
It was the first Monday finish at the PGA Championship in 19 years. And not since 1986 at Inverness had a player from the last group won with a birdie on the 72nd hole at the final major.

Congratulations to Lefty! He birdied 18 when neither Elkington nor Bjorn could.
But both of their putts missed by very little indeed.
On the other hand, Mickelson's putt at 17 was even closer, and could easily have dropped.
His shot out of the deep rough yesterday onto the green was awesome. Almost as awesome as Tiger's chip from the muck to save par. I'm glad to see Phil start winning some majors.
Never mind that, how did Tiger do? Where did he wind up on the leader board? Where did Tiger have breakfast this morning? What did he eat? What's wrong with his game? How come Tiger lost? Was it Tiger's swing? Was it Tiger's short game? Why didn't Tiger win? How does this effect Tiger? How is Tiger taking this?
Now if he would just start wearing a bra.
That was sick. All those lip outs. You have to be so exact on those greens!
Anyway, I'm glad lefty won. I love the fact that he's such a great family man. Did you hear him thanking his kids for sharing the moment with him? One of the mikes picked it up.
That guy is just really down to earth.
He's one lefty I like...
Juuuust a little burnt out on the striped one are we? ;D!
Glad to see him win again!
I hope Mickelson wins many more. He's a good family man and a genuinely nice guy (not that the other guys out there are by any means bad).
I understand your Tiger fatigue. Sometimes its to the point of ridiculousness. I actually have a little Danica fatigue.
I was rooting for Elk; he's had to overcome some pretty serious illnesses and injuries the past few years, and it's good to see him back playing well.
Sarcasm noted, but Tiger did finish in a 2-way tie for 4th (with Davis Love III), at -2.
Way to go, Phil!
Rules Alert: Pictures please...
Heh.
I love golf, and I'm glad (I guess) to see Tiger bringing more fans to our game, but I'm not sure that they are the right kind of fans...I'm beginning to grow mighty weary of "it's all about Tiger" whenever I turn on any round of golf.
The rest of the field was saved by the lightning yesterday. They were well on their way to choking themselves out of the tourney (after feeling Tiger's pressure) when the officials halted play, but they got to regroup and play in the much cooler morning weather. ....which saved them.
