SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Phil Mickelson delivered another dramatic finish in a major on Monday, flopping a chip out of deep rough to 2 feet for a birdie on the final hole and a one-shot victory in the PGA Championship.
The putt wasn't nearly as long as his 18-footer to win the Masters last year, and there was no need to jump for joy this time.
Still, it was a sweet conclusion to a major championship season that had gone sour until he put together his best golf of the summer stretched over five days at Baltusrol by a storm-delayed final round.
It was the first Monday finish at the PGA Championship in 19 years. And not since 1986 at Inverness had a player from the last group won with a birdie on the 72nd hole at the final major.

THe European tour offers the big names like Woods, Daly, Els huge appearance fees. I'v eheard those fees make dwarf actual prize money. Els has not playes as much in the states this year because it would cost him too much money. A couple of years ago it was 2 mill a pop....I'llbet its more now.
True, true. That ad campaign is the silliest, most ridiculous since the Mentos campaign.
On another note... I find it to be exactly the opposite, I think that the media CONSISTENTLY say "that's out of character for Phil"..."I'm so shocked to see that from Phil"
Phil this, phil that.... He really chokes everytime he has the lead or co leads. OTOH, I like Tiger. The way that I'm impressed by anyone who is that dedicated to what they are good at. Say whatever you want, he's the greatest becuase he has worked harder than anyone to be so.
Ok, this is an unrelated rant, but why was the Walker Cup (finished yesterday) not on TV, other than the Golf Channel? Moreover, why is the Walker Cup being played at the same time as the PGA?
There are some of us golf fans out there that would like to watch the Walker Cup (indeed, I would rather WIN the Walker Cup than almost any other tournament), but it gets totally screwed.
I really love golf, but I think the PGA and the USGA are really f-ing up the amateur game the way they are going.
So Johnny Miller annoys / aggravates you also, with his inane comments?
I usually really enjoy Nantz's comments but he seemed a bit snarky Sunday, less professional, more peevish / cranky. In fact, some of the others were on the bash the players bandwagon. It wasn't seriously egregious, as is the case with some of the other network gripelings, but it made me wonder if they'd gotten enough sleep the night before.
And then the tourny was called for weather. I'm just glad Phil won.
Woo hoo! Go Mick. It's nice to see the '2nd best' (as he was called for a while) win, it's about time!
And, what color shirt was Tiger wearing?! LOL. Way to go, Mick!
That may well be. It's hard to measure contingencies like that. What was the more important factor? Tiger finishing an hour and a half ahead of the other leaders or this morning's players getting to rest and start over on a more benign course? That's impossible to measure. However, while the leaders were backing up yesterday, Tiger's 68 was the 3rd best score - and a lot of players finished before he did.
You're right, CBS does a pretty good job with the rest of it's crew. I'd like to see them try McCord in the lead analyst role.
I meant his off-course attitude. I don't mind seeing passionate reactions in sports. Now, I've never seen him curse on TV- if he does,in front of kids in the gallery, that's uncalled for. But then, I don't watch every golf match he's in, or every shot. Is he the only golfer that gets hot like that?
Since he was never leading yesterday, was his attitude bad? It's not like he pitches conniptions and falls on the grass kicking when he loses- like yesterday- does he?
I just have a casual interest in watching golf. Mickleson looks like a nice guy, glad to see him win. I just think Tiger is charismatic- and I like looking at him! It's a girl thing! :-P
Yes. For a guy that was driven off the PGA Tour because of the yips, he sure loves to act like he never, ever made a mistake in his entire playing career. You can pretty much choose any of the following quotes and insert them as a preface for any sentence that might come out of Johnny Miller's mouth:
"This is such an easy shot..."
"What a horrible effort..."
"How could he miss something so easy..."
"That's a terrible effort from that spot on the green." (my personal favorite)
"When I won two US Opens..."
"When I shot a 63 at Oakmont, still a US Open record..."
Probably a tough sell, because, if nothing else, McCord is banned from the Masters. Hard to justify not having your lead analyst at the biggest golf tournament of the year.
Have you heard who Nicklaus picked for the final two slots for the Presidents cup?
Great pictures. Thanks so much for bringing them over.
But then the press would complain that the PGA officials 'gave' the tourney to Tiger.
Not enough people care about the Walker Cup.
Where is his trophy wife?
Tiger always wears a red shirt on Sundays.
Far as I know, he hasn't picked yet, but I think the consensus is Justin Leonard and Freddy Couples.
Couples has actually been playing really well this year, but never plays enough tournaments to qualify on points because of his back. Besides that, Freddy should get a lifetime pass because of '96.
