SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Phil Mickelson delivered another dramatic finish in a major on Monday, flopping a chip out of deep rough to 2 feet for a birdie on the final hole and a one-shot victory in the PGA Championship.
The putt wasn't nearly as long as his 18-footer to win the Masters last year, and there was no need to jump for joy this time.
Still, it was a sweet conclusion to a major championship season that had gone sour until he put together his best golf of the summer stretched over five days at Baltusrol by a storm-delayed final round.
It was the first Monday finish at the PGA Championship in 19 years. And not since 1986 at Inverness had a player from the last group won with a birdie on the 72nd hole at the final major.

Rule 7)Lengthen the courses and tailor them to his play to eliminate most of the field....then call it "tiger proofing"
Everyone who makes the cut gets a paycheck, with dead last probably getting $10K to $20K in a biggie like the PGA. Lesser tournaments pay off less but even a player who consistently finishes in the Top 20 will make a lot of money for the year. Results from today:
Mickelson 1ST $1.17M
Elkington / Bjorn Tied for 2ND $572K Each
Hal Sutton Dead Last $11.6K
I think I heard someone yell just that on #17 this weekend. I made Mrs. kevkrom laugh when I turned to her and said, "someone should beat that idiot senseless".
add me to the list. Lots of morons out there whop can't keep their mouths shut.
I thought I clearly saw Davis Love hightailing it out of there like he saw lightening yesterday when the horn blew.
You mean a brosseire.
How much is an entry fee?
You did. Both he and lefty wanted out of there. They did, however, say that the darkness would've been more of problem scoring wise then the wind or rain. The leaders were mad that they did not start play earlier in the day when they knew a storm was coming. CBS wanted the tourny to end at 1900 eastern time as a lead in to 60 liberals. There was a 30 minute weather delay earlier in the day that pushed everything back.
Roid Rage
YUP!
Bikini wax'd the greens.
I'm a big Tiger fan but in some respects I think Phil is more talented, especially in the short game.
Phil's problem has always been his "go for broke" attitude in all situations. He took too many doubles.
Glad to see him win since he changed his strategy of play.
...and what was with Bobby Clampett today? Usually a very insightful commentator, he was on Phil's case from the very first hole.
More specifically, if there is a tie for second place between two folks they split the money that was earmarked for 2nd and 3rd. If there's three that tied for third place, they would split the purse earmarked for 4th, 5th, and 6th, etc..
He's on them...but he's also a little pampered.
For the record, Tiger was +5 the first round, -1 for the second to post a 144, right on the cut line. Then he shot -4, -2 on the weekekn to score -2 for the tourney.
But who's counting :)
Like his antics or not, his talent and course management are superior.
Erin Crocker:
I disagree. His talent is amazing. His course management is subpar, so to speak. I often see him do really stupid things on the golf course, but his talent allows him to get away with them.
Often huh?
How about a few specifics because I don't see him "often" doing stupid things.
He does not do stupid things on the golf course. Off it, however, I think he's cheating the public by doing roids.
..and you can source that comment???
