Mickelson wins second major title [PGA Championship]

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Phil Mickelson delivered another dramatic finish in a major on Monday, flopping a chip out of deep rough to 2 feet for a birdie on the final hole and a one-shot victory in the PGA Championship.

The putt wasn't nearly as long as his 18-footer to win the Masters last year, and there was no need to jump for joy this time.

Still, it was a sweet conclusion to a major championship season that had gone sour until he put together his best golf of the summer stretched over five days at Baltusrol by a storm-delayed final round.

It was the first Monday finish at the PGA Championship in 19 years. And not since 1986 at Inverness had a player from the last group won with a birdie on the 72nd hole at the final major.

I miss Ben Wright who apparently was drunk most of the time and had a good on air feud going with Gary McCord.

Let's go over the Tiger rules...

Rule 1) Tiger coverage where ever he is on the leaderboard.

Rule 2) The leaderboard will show Tiger atop all others with the same score as we go to commercial. Even if Tiger is only on hole 6, and 5 others have finished at the same score, Tiger goes on top.

Rule 3) The leaderboard will show all pages necessary to get to Tiger's score. If Tiger is even, and in 23rd place, please show 3 pages of scores (8 per page, thanks) until you get to Tiger's position, as detemined by Rule 2

Rule 4) Tiger must have complete silence for his shots, even though he has always bragged that his dad would distract him during his swing when he was a kid to develop his concentration.

Rule 5) When Tiger is distracted by you, he will be allowed to hold the back of his left wrist to his mouth and stare at you.

I always thought he got a raw deal. I think he made a valid observation, even if not in the most articulate way.

"Never mind that, how did Tiger do? Where did he wind up on the leader board? Where did Tiger have breakfast this morning? What did he eat? What's wrong with his game? How come Tiger lost? Was it Tiger's swing? Was it Tiger's short game? Why didn't Tiger win? How does this effect Tiger? How is Tiger taking this?"

How many people did he push out of his way as he threw another hissy fit for losing?

Funny thing, though... once Mickelson teed off on Sunday, I didn't hear anything about Tiger Woods for a while -- I remeber seeing him finish the 9th, and had assumed he was still going backwards becaue they stopped talking about him. It wasn't until he got back to even that they started showing him again.

How does that fit in with "the rules"?

Well, there was a 6 horse race to the finish. We see now what it takes to get the coverage back to the top of the leaderboard.

We didn't see much of Ben Curtis, although he was close to level par through the round. I think he fell to plus three, and the non-coverage was justified.

You know, my girlfriend, who is amply-chested, has just begun playing golf. We were out on the course the other day, and she was doing ok, but one time, after a bad shot, she said to me, "I think my boobs are messing up my swing."

I said yes and thought about Ben Wright. When she said it on the golf course, it's no big deal and I'm sure no other women in the area, if having heard it, would have flipped out. Ben Wright says it and his life is ruined. All the liberal feminists flip out and talk about how he's sexist. Kind of sad, really.

She's not really all that attractive. Most guys wouldn't give her a second look if they passed her on the street.

Mickelson is every bit as talented as Tiger, the difference between Tiger and Mick is conditioning and the will to win. Tiger has always had both, Mickelson has figured out that winning isn't everything but it sure the hell beats second. Now if he conditions himself to the level of Vijay and Tiger we'll have another big three for years to come.

I'm not sure I agree with Phil being just as talented as Tiger. I do agree that Tiger works harder and is more obsessed with winning. Tiger would never let himself blimp up like Mickelson has.

Tiger will always have an advantage over Mickelson in majors. There are two types of players - ballstrikers and short gamers. Every player is more one than the other. I think most great players, such as Woods, Hogan, Nicklaus, Faldo, tend to be better ballstrikers who will themselves to develop a good enough short game to win - who then learn how to manage themselves around a course. On the other hand, it's harder for a short gamer, like a Mickelson or Ballesteros, to develop into a consistently great ballstriker.

I am one of those fans who never tires of hearing about or watching Tiger.

However, listening to the crude shrieking of the fans seems totally out of place.

Good for Phil. One more major ( 3 or more) and he will be in a class of the best golfers to play the game.

I would like to club every moron who yells "its in the hole!" every time a ball is hit, even if it is off the tee on a monster hole like Baltusrol No. 17.

Yes, me too. I thought he would slip in there. And yesterday the commentators weren't even mentioning him until suddenly he popped into the lead. Nice pay day for him...... wonder if he'll have any more shots at a major.

The players were more worried about the darkness, then the wind. I never found out if the course actually took the brunt of the storm or not.

Religious and Democrat are not compatible. Rush talked about playing with Duval years ago but would discuss his politics with listeners.

Mainly due to Tiger and the new fans he has brought to the game through television, purses are up, up, up! Mickelson as the winner today gets about $1.3 million. Elkington and Bjorn probably each got $500K.

All the Tour players should love Tiger, because mainly due to him they're all getting richer. The Top 40 money winners last year all won over $1 Million for the year, the Top 20 over $2 Million. Even the lowest fully exempt player, Number 125 on the money list, still won almost $700K. Mind you, many of these guys never even win once in their careers but can still make a very good living. Win once a year and you're a millionaire for sure. Win twice a year and you're a multimillionaire and a superstar to boot. Win a couple of majors and you're practically enshrined in the pantheon.

I agree the Jordan rules exist for Nicklaus then and Woods now.

I don't like them throwing the term "Tiger proofing" at us. They make you think they are making it more difficult for him when in actuality they're eliminating 95% of the rest of the field by tailoring the course and making it longer.

The tour does not want any Shawn Micheals or Ben Curtis's winning...ratings go in the tank. It would be the same as IBM hoping their stock values are cut by 50%.
