You should have made it clear to the congregation why you were leaving. Some may think it was because you had an emergency. Too bad you didn't stand up and say to the preacher "we don't come to church to hear politics".

I thought about it but a confrontation didn't feel right at the time and still doesn't. Plus it was our former choir director's 80th birthday with her whole family sitting there, 3 or 4 generations so I guess you can say I'm chicken or over-accomodating, etc.

I heard that that is exactly what happened in my former parish. Some guy stood up during the sermon and said it. Man, oh man, I wish I was there because I would have stood up and left with him in solidarity.
