I am still wondering why they are landing at this time. I also heard there was atleast one later opportunity (9:18am) and possibly a third window.

Someone on broadcast radio said this is the first darkness landing. That report is incorrect. There have been numerous night landings of the Space Shuttle. Several Shuttle Commanders actually prefer night landings at KSC because the runway is brilliantly lit at KSC and presents a clear target without the other visible distractions during daylight. Rain storms are also less likely to crop up in the early morning hours at KSC. All things considered, it's a good time to land from NASA's perspective.

That's near my wake-up time so I may catch it. I've been praying for the Discover crew today. Like they say, it's not as routine as it looks.

We know all the unemployed liberals my taxes support will be watching. They certainly don't have to get up in the morning.

The runaway freight train description of landing sounded frightening to me.

Yes, its a legacy system. For us DSL is where we are going. However, there are still lots of people using dialup.

The husband of Columbia's deceased astronaut, Laural Clark is also an astronaut. He took part in the investigation. Yesterday, on CNN Headline News he revlead that NASA knew a lot about the actions of the Columbia's crew in those final minutes.
He said they were "working the problem" up until final momements when they realized there was no hope. He said at that point Laural reached out and held KC's hand.
