From friends at ABC; Peter Jennings is near death. This is unconfirmed, but from usually reliable sources.
The ABC anchor, who was born in Canada but became a US citizen, announced a few months ago that he was suffering from lung cancer. He has not made a televised appearance since.

"THANKFULLY, LAURA'S CHEMO SUMMER COMES TO A CLOSE: It is over. Laura has officially graduated from chemotherapy! (Yes, there was cake, a diploma, and applause in the chemo room!) We'll have some new photos up of the final Round 4 "posse" who joined Laura with food, laughter, and good cheer. The "dose dense" regimen (4 treatments every two weeks, versus the usual every three weeks) was a bit tougher in the final rounds than we hoped, but all in all--everything worked out very well, with limited inconveniences and side-effects. Thank all of you for your continued prayers, emails, Mass intention cards--for staying with me in spirit and on the air through this odyssey. Many others need your prayers and concern more than I--but I really do appreciate it."

I had an earlier reply pulled by a mod for reasons I can only guess. I mustered the best sentiments I could for on who, up until today apparently, was an avowed enemy of conservatives.I gather it wasn't glowing enough.

I know of no one who I grew up with (and we grew up in the fifties surrounded by second hand smoke) who got lung cancer from it.
