How Bush thinks: intuition over intellect
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 5, 2005 | Jonathan Chait

Posted on 08/06/2005 4:06:51 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

...."... I think it's important for me and for you to look for the depth of a person's soul and character. I was touched by the fact your mother gave you the cross.' " Bush publicly testified of Putin, "I was able to get a sense of his soul."

...Bush is even apt to apply this particular brand of illogic to his own character. In one of the 2000 presidential debates, Al Gore pointed out that Bush as governor of Texas opposed a measure to expand children's healthcare and instead used the money for a tax cut. The debate moderator then asked Bush, "Are those numbers correct? Are his charges correct?" To which Bush replied, "If he's trying to allege that I'm a hardhearted person and I don't care about children, he's absolutely wrong."

...Gore was trying to make a point about Bush's moral priorities by establishing a series of facts about Bush's behavior. Rather than deny having chosen tax cuts over children's healthcare, or explain his rationale for having done so, Bush changed the subject to more comfortable ground: judging people's hearts. He asked the audience to intuit, based on the way he carries himself, that he is a warmhearted person, and thus to reject out of hand any facts that might clash with this impression.

The point isn't just that Bush refuses to engage with facts he finds inconvenient. ... It's that Bush rejects reason itself. Reason is a process by which we draw our broader conclusions from an accumulation of specific evidence. When the evidence changes ....., our conclusions can also .....Bush, on the other hand, arrives at his beliefs through intuition. His supporters marvel at the unshakeable certainty of his convictions. Well, no wonder.

Chait is just another paid-by-the-word lib,

I'd guess his job could be "outsourced," fairly easily.

"When the evidence changes ....., our conclusions can also"

State the evidence sufficient for you to become a Republican, vote for Republicans, admire Bush's leadership, support the war on terror, admit the left has been wrong in the past about our enemies and how to fight them, and apologize for the harm you have thereby caused. Then you can lecture us on the nature of reason. As a fact, there is no combination of circumstances that would make this shill do so. In his own terms, he is a completely irrational partisan.

my sister is hooked on her daily dose of hate from writers on that commie rag. She claims she "balances" the Slimes with a San Fernando Valley paper whose editorial policy is farther right, but the leftist Slimes has messed up her mind in many ways. She voted for RATs.

Funny... I was just thinking of how often my Liberal sister loves to stress the superiority of intuitiveness to conscious decisionmaking.

When we used to talk politics, she didn't like it when I (rarely) questioned (i.e., applied logic to) some stance taken by her adored "Leftist Spokesperson de Jour."

Once in a while I would get tired of quietly listening to her go on and on, about her political involvements and I would make a comment.

The last time we talked politics, I questioned too much of what she said and she got angry. I suggested we completely stop talking about politics. Our conversations are much more pleasant now.

I know longer have to turn down her offers to send me money to buy a ticket to see the latest Michael Moore film.

Jonathan has no clue about the thinking process of the "Master of the Rope-A-Dope". I thought the writer missed an essential point: that Bush's reply was made whilst engaged in a televised presidential debate. Politics at that level has almost nothing to do with policy; rather, it's connecting with people. Bush adeptly rebuffed Gore's insinuation and avoided Gore's tendency to wallow in wooden, mundane point-counterpoint recitals.

while the two parties are concerned with frivoloties, like school children trying to impress who knows who, we are being slowly overrun at our boarders and others coming into this country who do not appreciate the land and the blood shed by WW11 men. This country was bought with blood from the Civil War on and these baby boomer politicians who grew up rich by most of the worlds standards are still politically naive. But believe me China, Korea, and all Moslem nations have plans for us. We are, or our leaders are too politically correct, naive and dishonest to see it coming.

Jonathan Chait's article really describes liberal thinking... they're big on feelings and avoiding reality. A classic case of projection here.

On Jonathan Chait:

On the other hand, Jonathan Chait tells us that President Bush is stupid for advocating academic freedom on this subject (How Bush thinks: intuition over intellect). Chait is absolutely pathological on the subject of President Bush; he recently perpetrated a column actually attacking the President for being too physically fit! In a rational writer, this would be shocking. However, every time Chait writes on President Bush, we should all remember that he admits to and has defending being a Bush-hater.

From my blogged essay, Darwinians: thundering forth the new "ipse dixit" .

That's funny. Most of the libs I know also rely on intuition and inference instead of reasoning and evidence to arrive at their conclusions. So what's Chait's real problem? Is he just projecting his liberal thinking patterns onto the left's current bete noir, as those of his ilk are wont to do?

How Bush thinks:

---

does he, or doesn't he think?

He really doesn't have to think. All he has to do is dress up, appear in front of a camera, after much preparation and reversals, and just read the script that his master, the neocons, tell him to read. He's a pretty good reader, i give him that. But, where is the beef?
