INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.
The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.
Nicknames or mascots deemed ``hostile or abusive'' would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.
``What each institution decides to do is really its own business'' outside NCAA championship events, he said.
Guidelines were not immediately available on which logos and nicknames would be considered ``hostile or abusive.''
The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions were offensive.
Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles).
The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos.
Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in 2008.
Now the Dearborn Junior College Fightin Ragheads or the Detonators or the Tennessee Tech Terrorists....Those could be questionable
Back in the 50's we had an indian mascot who used to be at all the football games here. He was pretty good!
And what about cattle whose horns are short???
"Sooners" are offensive to us procrastinators.
And just what the hell is a "Ute"?
Up to the early 70s, it was the eastern Eastern Washington State University "Savages". Mascot was an Indian with a scalp. Even the Native Americans on campus, and there were a lot of them, were against changing the mascot to 'Eagles'.
I have no idea....they are green. I've never seen an actual mascot, just VERY large cheerleaders, and a future NBA player that dismantled my school's team like they were a bunch of little toddlers with a nasty case of diaper rash.
I'd like to see FSU and the Seminoles join together to buck the NCAA with a lawsuit.
Once again, where is the tolerance so celebrated by the left under other circumstances? Where is the enchantment with freedom of speech and expression? I guess a team called the "Dung-encrusted Marys" would be ok or the "Piss-submerged Crucifixes" would be welcome...
This gets so tiring....
The Chickens and the PCs?
Actually (appropriate enough) Sooners were criminals, if I remember correctly. They were the people who illegally jumped the gun, so to speak, at the Oklahoma land rush.
You made me laugh. Now that's funny.
Rush talking about this now.
*sigh* First they come for the Indian mascots..next they will come for the Irish mascots.
As a tribute to my Texas and ASU roots..."Don't mess with Sparky!!" ;o)
Hahahahahahahahahaha! WOW, that is a good one. LMAO
Yours is a very good post and perspective. I am of Irish decent and have always taken pride in the University of Notre Dame being called the Fighting Irish. I don't understand the problem. Team nicknames are a celebration of historical figures and heritage.
I'm glad someone posted about this. Bob Knight is actually testifying on behalf of the NIT. I hope they stick it to the NCAA.
My High School recently changed from the Fighting Redskins to the Red Hawks.
Blah.....
That would be delicious revenge :-)
