Being a Nole alum, I know the name calling is a result of years of domination in NCAA football. When losses and humiliation set in and pride is ripped out and stomped on, the only thing left is name calling.

You've completely missed his point, but since you started out on this thread by issuing a red herring, and followed up with more, it seems to be intentional.

None of us here are arguing in favor of silly empty PC actions or favoritism, which was what the thread was about. Continued enforcement of agreements signed long ago is not seeking 'special rights' or status, no matter how much you try to escalate the topic with KKK accusations. Calm down.

No, the jokes are in response to years of illegal and unethical behavior by your schools athletes and athletic department.

Nice try.

Wouldn't it be a hoot for the Seminole Tribe to file suit claiming violation of their right to expression as given through their permission to Florida State to use the name?

I definitely see racism in this NCAA ruling.

White heritage from the "Irish" to the "Spartans" can be honored but Native Americans are denied that honor in spite of a tribal resolution desiring it.

June 17, 2005..... Seminole Tribe supports use of Seminole name

Some vicious law firm needs to go after the NCAA's deep pockets and make them pay through the nose for this vile, racist ruling.

However, two things bother me. One is the name Washington Redskins

How about if they changed the team's name to the Washington Rednecks?

Nice try indeed. Let those without sin cast the first stones. FSU just goes under the magnifying glass more often due to success of the program. No one gives a rats ass if players or coaches at Wake Forest do anything illegal. And you can’t tell me they don’t.

You could (and should) be lead plaintiff in a class action suit. Ping to all FReeper lawyers.

*sigh* First they come for the Indian mascots..next they will come for the Irish mascots.

You are on track, the PC movement knows no end to the enhancement of government control. Obviously these attempts to ban certain mascot names is in that direction. In the ideal PC Utopia, all people would be considered to be from the same group, and it would not be named something that excites and stimulates the group to compete and win a great victory, Because competition and victories will all be gone. The problem with Utopians is that they always end up enslaving people. I would be happy to see the NCAA stopped right now.

Hmm, that rationalizing sounds familiar...

FSU Bill Clinton just goes under the magnifying glass more often due to success of the program Democrats. No one gives a rats ass if players or coaches at Wake Forest Republicans do anything illegal. And you can’t tell me they don’t.

According to the Washington Post, "Braves" for the University of North Carolina-Pembroke is OK, because "the school's student body has historically admitted a high percentage of American Indians and more than 20 percent of the students are American Indians."

Illinois is derived from "iliniwok", apparently from the Algonquin term for "warriors" or "tribe of superior men". (Google is so much fun.) So is the state name offensive? If the state name isn't offensive, why should an Indian mascot for the flagship university in the state be offensive? What if the U of I has a few Native Americans enrolled? Is it OK then?

Being from Wisconsin, I always like the Rhinelander HS mascot -- the Hodag.

There's a bunch of mythological Indian beasties out there - maybe the schools that are facing this idiotic rule could change to one of them. When Marquette was dithering over a new name, I suggested the Piasa Bird, a legendary and fearsome creature of Indian lore described by Pere Marquette. Much more awe-inspiring than a golden eagle.

I'll bet that's not authentic Illini Indian garb.

How about something more like this:

Just when you might think we can't do any more stupid things, we manage to do another stupid thing. We are so lucky to have such people in charge of the NCAA.

Wondering if PETA will start to lobby the political correct worshipers and call for a ban on animal nicknames.

If this stands, that WILL be next.

My wife's family came over from Vik in Denmark. Should they be protesting the Minnesota Vikings?

Or for that matter, should all FReepers protest the New England Patriots?

You've completely missed his point, but since you started out on this thread by issuing a red herring, and followed up with more, it seems to be intentional.

My point is that the story here is not the mascots, but the motivation of those pushing for the ban on the mascots.

The motivation is just an attempt to tweak the nose of paleface.

As far as "continued enforcement of agreements signed long ago" I don't think they specified free college educations.

As far as escalating the topic goes, that honor goes to those who claim to be "More Equal"!

I guess it would be one thing if the mascot were a druken casino owner...

But these schools mascots are a symbol of reverence, not meant as an ethnic slur.

What's next, Irish groups protesting the Celtics?
