Sprinkling Holy Water on 'The Da Vinci Code'
New York Times ^ | August 7, 2005 | SHARON WAXMAN

Posted on 08/04/2005 11:43:04 AM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

But "Da Vinci," set for release in May, is shaping up as one of the movie world's more complicated exercises - so much so that Sony has dropped a scrim of secrecy over the affair, refusing to discuss anything but the barest details. The script has been closely controlled. Outsiders have been banned from the set. And those associated with the film have had to sign confidentiality agreements.

...their silence is a measure of concern about the potentially incendiary nature of the subject matter. The book, which is fiction, takes aim at central Christian dogma, claiming that Jesus had a child with Mary Magdalene, who was meant to be his true heir. It alleges an enormous coverup by the Roman Catholic Church, which, according to the book, usurped Mary's place in favor of a male-oriented hierarchy that has suppressed what Mr. Brown calls the "sacred feminine."

...Studio officials have consulted with Catholic and other Christian specialists on how they might alter the plot of the novel to avoid offending the devout..

"We came up with three things," Ms. Nicolosi said: the more ambiguous approach to the central premise, the removal of Opus Dei and amending errors in the book's description of religious elements in art....

[T]here are signs that the studio has not ruled out attracting religious moviegoers, including those who made an international sensation last year of Mel Gibson's film, "The Passion of the Christ."

"The phrase I heard used several times was 'Passion dollars'; they want to try to get 'The Passion' dollars if they can," said Ms. Nicolosi, referring to her conversations about the film. "They're wrong," she added. "It's sacrilegious, irreligious. They're thinking they can ride the 'Passion' wave with this.

And I said, 'Are you kidding me?' "

Besides, according to a popular, oft-sent email from conservatives in the late 90s, there is no "Right To Not Be Offended". So, get over it.

Who said there was? Get over your superiority complex. I can debate any issue I like, and as a non-bleiever I am not "offended" by anything except the perpetuation of BS. You're obviously a fan of such, but I would never dream of telling you to get over whatever makes you happy.

Now get over it, and let us get on with whatever we feel like discussing.

I've read through most of the posts on this thread, and all you've done is attack people, repeatedly calling them "idiot, dumb, etc". There are rules for polite conversation, and posting on FR and I think you should attempt to learn them.

I suggest you read the post by those who see this book as such a terrible thing. It's a dime store novel ,nothing else. read it and find out yourself.

Perhaps Mr. Brown is unaware that the primary source of research, "Holy Blood, Holy Grail," is fiction. The people behind the hoax have admitted as much.

As I understand it, one of the writers claimed they were hypotheses, and didn't claim that these things were the final truth, but educated guesses. Brown, on the other hand, seems to be saying that he looked into them and BELIEVES them.

"My prediction is that the da vinci code heresy movie will crash and burn as it should."

Poor, beach-read writing != heresy. Unless you're a big fan of the Inquisition and the Witch Trials?

" No believing Christian should give any money to this type of tripe."

No fan of any film should give money to a movie-based-on-a-book, as the movie never does the book justice. "Shawshank Redemption" and "Jaws" being 2 glaring exceptions.

" On the other hand 'The Chronicles of Narnia' by C.S. Lewis that is due in theaters by Christmas will approach the 'Passion of the Christ' in sales."

I doubt it will be nearly as good as the children's cartoon movie of the same name they used to show back in the 70s. I LOVED "Chronicles...". So much so that I read every book in the series. Although it didn't do much for my Christianity, it was still a very entertaining book series. Also, might not some Christians be offended at the "Jesus is a Big Lion" caricature and consider that blasphemy? Jesus wasn't a lion, nor was he killed by a witch!!

But, since I have read all the books, the movie can not possibly measure up to the images my mind already conjured when reading!

Then don't buy it or see the movie ..Simple..If your faith is that THIN that this book upsets

Well, I won't. For the same reason I wouldn't have gone to see Maplethorpes so called "art."
This does not mean my faith is thin. I just don't like or will not promote someone who slanders my faith. --And makes loads of money by doing it, cleverly.
