I'm considering getting transfered from my job and moving to San Deigo or Los Angeles (where my company has offices.)
Any Freepers want to give a Jersey girl some advice?
I've never been to Ca. but I've had it with Jersey. I know there are at least five Conservatives in Califorina (thats three more than NJ)- help me out people!
Moonstone Hotels have most of the hotels in Cambria. We stayed at the Fogcatcher but I would also recommend Cambria Pines Lodge. Have fun!

Unless she is in San Diego...Now that I am in Northern VA and PA, I have noticed a migration from the western states to here...Northern VA is now complaining about the same thing that CA has been fighting for years - overcrowded and closing ERs, drivers licenses, shelters for day laborers...you name it. Where did you move to? I do have to say though, I loved Ventura County - lived in Camarillo since 1996 and grew up in Oxnard. I miss the ocean.

hey, i know this is not to me, but in PA we have a lot of water...I have a creek right by my house where we can tube or kayak when we feel like it. OKAY, no kayak yet, but definitely tubes.
I grew up in Ox and lived in Camarillo for years and I really did not know very many gay people? I think the illegal population seemed more threatening than the gays.
SoCal is a vast improvement from Jersey. You'll absolutely love it. And there are far more consevatives out here then they want you to know about.
San diego is much preferable to Los Angeles. Let me know when you're coming and I'll roll out the red carpet for you.

Yep, the pennisula and the East Bay have it the best transportation-wise in the Bay Area (BART,CalTrans,Muni.) The North and South Bay have a lot to work to do. Ahem, that is what San Jose gets for not jumping on board with BART in the 1970s. We are becoming the little LA of the north. Okay, maybe not, but traffic is starting to back up at 4 pm.
Anyhow, I have lived in two parts of CA: the Bay Area and the Central Coast. I used to absolutely love living in the Bay Area, but between moving back, the election, and the absence of hockey (and a horrible sports year in general) this year, much of my love for the area has kinda worn off. The Central Coast is BEAUTIFUL, but there is hardly anything to really do out there, very little industry (other than education and defense), and is home to mostly college students and retired folks (at least in SB and SLO).
So I can't completely offer too much advice when it comes to the LA/SD debate. However, if I was EVER to move south (ie farther south than San Luis Obispo) I would move to Santa Barbara (extremely expensive) or San Diego (expensive, but more reasonable). The weather is some of the best in the state by and far. And this is a state in which the weather is the biggest selling point. If I were to move farther north, Sacramento would be great, but it is HOT.
Since you are an architect, you might also want to try San Luis Obispo. It's home to one of the best architecture colleges in the country and has a ton of firms in the area. If you are from a big city, you will have some culture shock, but if you love the beach and the art and culture surrounding university towns, I think you would love it. And it's less expensive.
Someone mentioned moving to Austin, Texas. For the last year and half, I have been considering a move there. I figure it would not be that much different than where I am now, just with a much better music scene, a university that would be a perfect grad school option, and severely hot and humid weather. Am I wrong?
Good for you. I just moved from Youngstown, Ohio, an area between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I went to San Diego, and rented a decent but very small place (compared to my ohio home) in Cardiff-by-the-sea. 1 mile to the beach.
Of course it could take months to sell back in Ohio, so I am not even thinking of buying out here.
Being single you have a lot more options. I'd tell you I was a studly hunk waiting to sweep you off your feet, but at 36 that is no longer true, and my wife wouldn't like me saying that. I had to move to a family and school friendly community, whereas you can go to Pacific Beach, or the gaslamp particularly if you don't mind being a roommate. If you want to be by yourself, those areas are a little tougher to get for 1300.
Of course like it has been said many times it depends where your office is. If it is in La Jolla, you might want to go north a little ways. If it is Mission Valley there are great apt. communities down there. Downtown, you have gaslamp, little italy and balboa park.
You forgot to mention that in Orange County, even the Industrial buildings are beautifully designed and well kept.
There is definitely the feeling that in Orange County, nothing bad will ever happen because everyone's rich and lives together harmoniously because everyone's rich.
There are no poor people in Irvine or Newport Beach, because they can't afford the housing. $1,000 a month is entry-level apartment living. Of course the apartments are all slick looking and superbly maintained. Donald Bren, owner of the Irvine Company, sees to that. The upside of this monocultural, white-bread life is that you know you're safe, and it's not an illusion -- you are.
When you see a factory that could compete with the best office space in the East, you know you're in trouble back there.
Until you know how much it costs to live there.
Until I moved back east, I thought Los Angeles' infrastructure was crumbling. Now I know better. It's in excellent condition compared to what I see here.
I'm embarassed to admit I live where I live :-(. I plan on moving to Miami by late this year/early next.

In Southern Cal, the weather can not be beat.
I am talking 70 degrees in December, and about 85 in summer.
And snow only if you want it!
You can fish an alpine lake in the morning, go 4 wheel driving in the wide open desert, and lay on the beach in the evening.
ALL IN THE SAME DAY!
Learn Spanglish. It will be good enough.
