I'm considering getting transfered from my job and moving to San Deigo or Los Angeles (where my company has offices.)
Any Freepers want to give a Jersey girl some advice?
I've never been to Ca. but I've had it with Jersey. I know there are at least five Conservatives in Califorina (thats three more than NJ)- help me out people!
Oh hell if I know. It was only my wife and boys too. I was aleady here in SLC.
You can make money in those more remote places......just become a doctor, dentist, lawyer etc.
San Diego is a great choice. The weather is nearly perfect and it's majority registered Republican. I lived in LA for 15 years. It's a great city to be a young person and develop a career, but the living is hard and you don't want to raise a family there unless you're extremely wealthy and can afford domestic help/child care.
Were in San Deigo or Los Angeles? ...I would not take a job on the north of downtown LA ...it really boils down to where you want to live, how far you want to commute and the traffic in the commute
Nice areas to live at still affordable price are So Orange County and the Inland Empire area (thats San Bernardino & Riverside County were they border Orange County...but its hot weather area)
Actually these days having a service business works well.
We had a B&B in Wyoming, that was fun!!
Beautiful area, loved every minute there.
Well, I'm not Mormon and have no issues at all here, but then I'm in Park City which is hardly typical of the state.... I'm a transplant from the East Coast and don't encounter anything but warm, friendly locals who are very welcoming - but if I were in a town that did not have as many 'outsiders' as Park City (which is overrun with people like me) then maybe my experience would be different. But I have to say that I greatly appreciate how Utah, overall, has a more sensible and conservative politics than the states I'm used to (MA, NY, PA), so if that's due to LDS (Mormon) influence then I really appreciate it!
C'mon out. California is fine. The lefties are very entertaining and for the most part harmless unless you're offended by gibberish. Politics is a blood sport so that's always fun.
I'd head for San Diego if I had the choice. I grew up in Mission Beach. When I was a kid the place was full of sailors, whores, working people and the rich and famous living side by side.
There are tons of things to do if you love the water. Boating, swimming, diving, fishing, everything. In short, SD is a great American city with a year 'round world class climate. Never too hot and never too cold.
One of my most lingering memories from childhood is standing at a bus stop on a winter morning amazed to see a thin sheet of frost on a puddle. That must have been some over night cold snap!
Illegals abound in both places but SD has the NAVY and military retirees that tend to make the city a bit more conservative.
Between the TWO....it is San Diego BY FAR!!!
O come now Fresno is just Bakersfield with out the charm and sophistication ;>
San Diego County in general is beautiful. However, you will not find affordable housing if you wanted to buy. Unless you live relatively close to where you work, you will be stuck in traffic. Gas prices are the most expensive in the nation.
We do have the beach, mountains nearby to the east, the Padres if you like baseball, the Chargers if you like football, fun areas in downtown in which to party, proximity to LA if you need it, tons of shopping malls, an airport that won't take you hours to get to.
It all depends on what you are looking for. We love it here, having lived in San Diego County for 11 years now. However, the traffic and the overcrowding in our area, Chula Vista, has started to grate on our nerves--we are contemplating a move to Texas.
Yes, both of those places are beautiful.
I live in Davis, which is only an hour and half from shores of Lake Tahoe. I go there several times a year and thoroughly enjoy the hiking and climbing.
If you ever get a chance you should climb Mt. Talac. Going East on Highway 50 to Lake Tahoe from the Sacramento area you will eventually run into the south shore of Lake Tahoe. If you turn left at Highway 89, traveling north and clockwise around the lake you will pass Fort Richardson and about 5 miles more you will see the trailhead for Mt. Talac. It is roughly a 10-11 mile hike roundtrip from the trailhead to the summit and back to the trailhead but the views are spectacular. At the summit you will be see Lake Tahoe in its entirety. The summit hangs over Emerald Bay area. Also from the summit you will see Fallen Leaf Lake, Catherdral Lake, Roundtop, Pyramid Peak, Desolation Valley etc. Check it out. Bring plenty of water and good hiking shoes. The climb is fairly rigorous but a person in reasonable shape can do it.
Now here's a thread we don't see too often...
"Walking through the hot spots at Redondo Beach in Feb. will make you nostalgic for Seaside or Point Pleasant Beach in August.It is nice but as many others have said, it's expensive and lots o traffic.

I've worked in Wall, Seaside (the boardwalk), and Point Pleasant Beach...
That's saying alot to compare Redondo Beach to those places.
I've lived in the Toms River/Brick area since '76 and love it. And it's an hour and a half max to whereever you want to go (Philly, NYC, Atlantic City, Wildwood, the Poconos, etc.)
Red Bank...It's close to the beach and the City -- what's the problem, DC? Just a change of scenery?
We have the best beaches in CA. HB is in conservative Orange County & very safe. It's a great place to live & raise a family.

I've hiked into DV many times from the trailhead at Emerald/Eagle. Never made it all the way to Talac - usually take my pole and hit some of the small lakes 3-4 miles in.
In some ways I guess that area is OK. However one problem I myself have, is that my wife has a number of gay friends that live in that area, so I would not call it family friendly. However, many of them live closer to the University.
