Obviously your friend didn't train them to be savage killers. The people that take these dogs and turn them into weapons make me sick.

You have to be careful about breeding, too many of these large popular breeds are not bred by responsible breeders. Inbreeding can cause lot's of problem including slightly crazy dogs. This dog sounds like a slightly crazy dog, the story also does not ring true, what mother is going to stand by and watch her baby be mauled to death? What kind of dog goes for the kill on it's first mauling? Most dogs don't and most mothers with figth like the devil. Something is amiss here.
