Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms

GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.

The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.

The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.

The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.

He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.

After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

Sorry about this difference of opinion, Travis, but IMO, that's not correct.
Keep in mind that poodles were originally bred as hunting dogs.
A true poodle is a good size dog. Not the toy poodles, but a true poodle
And it is true that it doesn't matter the breed, you can make ANY dog into a vicious beast that will attack with no provocation.

...that pups of any other member of the pack are fair game and seen as rivals...

Wrong again.

All the adult wolves will care for any pups.
Other females will nurse them and even young hunting males will regurgitate food for unrelated pups to eat.

It is NORMAL for a wolf/dog to attack a young rival in the order. Babies and young children are especially at risk.

Total horsehockey. Pack dogs, which are closer to wolves, are known to view children as pups, and treat them accordingly. Used to have a huge huskie/shepard mix, would snap anything less than 1/4" chain. When he did get away, we knew exactly where to find him -- schoolyards. We'd always find him surrounded by grade school kids who were riding him as a pony, pulling his tail, whatever. Those kids were his pups, and he loved playing with them.

The problem is not with dogs. The problem is with the breed, plain and simple. Stop denying the obvious.

Interesting story. And it shows how ill-informed owners encourage continued aggression by rewarding the dog with affection after behaving unacceptably.

"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF (i.e., dog bite related fatalities) reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through1992, and Rottweilers were responsible for about half of human DBRF reported during the 4 years from 1993 through 1996....[T]he data indicate that Rottweilers and pit bull-type dogs accounted for 67% of human DBRF in the United States between 1997 and 1998.... thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities." You are projecting, nutcase.

I agree, any dog can be mean. But when certain breeds outnumber the others by a huge percentage with HOMICIDES (I'm not talking just bites/attacks), there is a problem. A major problem.

Right, but 10 to 50 pound dogs which for whatever reason decide to go nuts on a child can't do the damage of a 150 pound rottie, and they can be pulled off by an adult witness.

That is a BIG reason not to own a 150 pound rottie: you may go to jail if your "big loveable galoot" one fine day attacks a neighbor's child, and mauls it to death.

You will be standing in front of a judge and jury whe will not be impressed with your "big loveable galoot" stories.

This is my second rott. My first has me hooked on this breed for life. They are loyal, playful, astute, sweet, personable and very trainable--everything you could want, really. I also enjoy their aesthetic and commanding presence, especially since my wife and I reside in a large city.

People make these dogs mean.

There are some dogs that are predisposed towards aggression. Pitbulls CAN'T safely be around other animals or small children, but are sweet as sugar with people most of the time. I've NEVER encountered a rotty that was anything less than affectionate as a boxer.

It's what people do to these animals in terms of abuse and neglect that make them a danger.

Instead of calling for entire breeds to be wiped out maybe we ought to screen DOG OWNERS for intelligence and common sense.
