Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms

GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.

The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.

The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.

The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.

He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.

After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

There is one major difference between a vicious poodle and a victious 150 pound Rottweiller.

The poodle will not be able to rip a baby from its mothers arms, drag it up a driveway, and bite it to death.

Call the lawyers. Has anyone tried to purchase homeowner's insurance lately? You get extensive questions about whether or not you own a dog... What kind of dog? Is it a "dangerous breed"? A mixed breed? What kind of mix? I think the time will come when only the very wealthy will be able to afford owning a dog. Then they'll come after our cats too. :-)

Well, how come people never make Labs or Goldens mean?

It's in the breed, and I wish Pit Bull and Rott owners would just face it.

I thought that deserved a repeat.

True story, some friends of my wife came to visit our house. They were traveling by RV and had two Rottweilers with them. They were not well trained in my estimation. They let them out of their RV, I went and strapped on my Smith&Wesson .357. "What are you doing?" "My kids are here. I'm not going to fight with your dogs if they attack, I am going to kill them". This made sense to them and we had a nice visit.

...It is NORMAL for a wolf/dog to attack a young rival in the order. Babies and young children are especially at risk...

You could not be more incorrect.

She had a hose. That could have been used as a weapon against the vicious canine.

Can't wait for the next mauling by a 'designer dog'. Labra-Oodles can be had already.

They do. I've been bitten by a lab. You can't condemn a whole breed, (or race for that matter) because some of them are vicious.

PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DEALING WITH WHEN THEY GET A DOG,

I've done Australian Shepherd rescue and it AMAZES me the people that get rid of them because they "chase my kids around and bite their ankles"..

The owners were not there.

They didn't understand that it wolf packs only the alpha male and female are allowed to breed and have their pups protected, that pups of any other member of the pack are fair game and seen as rivals.

Many of these pit bulls and rotties may seem to be sweeties; however, no one knows when or why they may snap and become vicious. Here in our small town, a neighbor's dog attacked a little girl next door that he knew and had allowed to pet him--did a lot of damage, but she lived. She was just out in her own yard playing and the dog raced over and jumped her---Why? Nobody knows.
It was a Rottweiler.

But, but, but...Rottweillers are so gentle and they love children, not like those evil, mean and nasty P*t B**ls.

Rottweilers are one of the most intelligent and lovable breeds.

Right in there with rattlesnakes, alligators, hyenas, grizzlys, and Dingos.

Let's just exterminate every species that has ever harmed anything else ever.

I'm not typically a jerk, but your statement is disgustingly hateful, especially as perceived by the very proud owner of a three-month-old rottweiler who is as sweet as could be.

I've known some that were like big babies, but I've also run across some that scared the bejeebers out of me. After my wife and I were cornered by two for about 15 minutes, I told the owner that from now on I was carrying my gun when in the are and she would do well to keep them confined to her property. Of course, she told me about what big babies they were. Many animals get that way with the owners, or with the owners around and are totally different when left to their own devices or when around strangers. At times, even the owners of these "big babies" get nasty surprises. Some breeds were bred for aggressiveness and should never be allowed loose in the public arena.

Most animals love their owners. It's how they react to folks entering the home, or outside.. that is the issue.. We had an Anatolian Shepherd once.. it bit someone--outside. That dog was sent to a farm immediately. And she was the sweetest little thing to my wife and I...

B.S.

Rottweilers have a known trait that make them snap without and reason or rhyme.

Obedient Rottweilers, "Oh that was the nicest dog, I can't believe he would have done anything like this" have killed hundreds of children over the past decade.. How many more toddlers have to die before you Rottweiler sycophants realize that we shouldn't be domesticating these beasts?

I don't give much attention to human situations, as in " he was abused as a boy" so that's why he raped and killed 10 women, so we should be merciful with him.....

So, you're equating a human beings upbringing with that of a canine?
