Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms
GLENDALE A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.
The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.
The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.
The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.
The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.
The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.
He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.
After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

However, they all need obedience training and should never be owned by those unwilling to commit a lot of time to the dog.Three words:
BUT THEY ARE!

Not even going to bother, bro. Apparently, I'm too naive and my head's too far in the clouds to even make a coherent statement.
There's no reasoning with true-believers anyway, it would be like trying to have a rational debate with DUers, or gun-grabbers...
But I will say this, before I lapse back into incoherency, Hope Depot installed Hoagland's carpet today. SAWEEEET! I'll send you pics.

The German Sheperd in my opinion is still arguably the best breed for police work. I don't think they have lost anything, I'd suggest they are universally far better trained than in years past and have been well integrated into the system.
A real good dog of steel temperment behaves like a lamb, until it's time to cast off the fleece mantle.
The best dogs should seem very mellow, because they are healthy, strong and confident in their abilities to win "The Game."

You are right about the final responsibility resting with the breeders and owners. The only thing I would add is for buyers to beware who they purchase dogs, any dog from. Reputable breeders charge more, but their dogs are well breed. It helps to start with the best.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked Why would someone have such a dog around children? 150 pounds? The grandparents should be euthanized, not the dog.

You have to be careful about breeding, too many of these large popular breeds are not bred by responsible breeders. Inbreeding can cause lot's of problem including slightly crazy dogs. This dog sounds like a slightly crazy dog, the story also does not ring true, what mother is going to stand by and watch her baby be mauled to death? What kind of dog goes for the kill on it's first mauling? Most dogs don't and most mothers with figth like the devil. Something is amiss here.

People make these dogs mean. How about those dogs that are bred to kill? It is my understanding such animals are born "mean".

Waste of time and your arm trying to strangle a dog.
If you are unarmed against somthing like a rottie, and he's closed with you, believe it or not, I'd ram my hand down his throat till it came out the end. You can't change your mind halfway though. You can't take your hand out until he drops and you have to keep pushing all the way to your shoulder if need be, or he'll be able to bite.
He can't bite if he's gagging on your forearm. Watch one puke and you'll notice how their jaws automatically widen. Gag reflex forces their mouth wide open.
Hope you never need that advice.

... I don't have a problem with professionals who need these dogs for security reasons....
And only the police should have guns, eh?

Just like people, some dogs, (of any breed) are just bad dogs. My sister had two Rottweilers from the same litter. One was a cream-puff named Bear who never hurt a fly, the other was named Beast, and I would not turn my back on him for one minute when small children were nearby.

Re:lovable breeds By the time mom could even react baby was dead and no longer moving so dog had also stopped. Fast powerful dogs! As a mom I would have taken the dog out before any law enforcement had a chance to respond. Need more info.

No! But if your dog kills you should be subject to the death penalty or life in prison.

I wish folks wouldn't assume that an aggressive dog was made that way by people. We once had English Mastiffs. I loved those dogs, and they were gentle giants until they had puppies. Then they were aggressive and frightening. I agree with you. Our breeder put it in the contract that our dog would be neutered before 7 months old, and he was. She said that the parent dogs' protective instincts were unbelievable, and that it is bred in the bone, no need for any training whatsoever.
And Mastiffs are SMART! Very good at sizing up people and their intentions. We love our mastiff puppy--he is the best, kindest, gentlest dog we have ever had, but we have no intention of being breeders. That would be like taking our lives in our hands, no matter how much they love us. Click on my name to see his pic on my profile page.

I love big dogs, I have own big dogs most of my life, but their are some rules, first never be mean to the dog, don't hit it, beat it or chain it. Rolled up newspaper while house training is fine but hold the dogs head down so it can not see your hand hitting it. Second, SOCIALIZE the dog, extremely important to SOCALIZE the dog, take it to friends houses, bars, farms, work, everywhere teach the dog how to act in the real world and it will be a very good dog. Third spend as much time with the dog as you can, take the dog with you whenever you go someplace that will allow the dog, make the dog part of the family. Lastly punish the dog when needed, I punish mine by grabbing the shin under her neck and then looking straight into her eyes telling her she is a bad dog, then if warranted I will make her go sit in a corner and think about things. LOL, my dogs have more friends then I do, everyone loves them. But then I pretty much only own Newfoundlander dogs and they are the world's finest dogs.
