Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms

GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.

The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.

The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.

The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.

He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.

After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

Show me where a 20# poodle (yes, I know the difference between toy, miniature and standard, and the first two are 95% of poodles) mauled a child to death.

There is one obvious solution - an armed citizenry trained to use firearms. Anyone witnessing a vicious animal attacking a human child could then quickly administer the necessary flash of lead and end this ridiculous nonsense. Not to jest over this deplorable tragedy but had someone nearby been packing a .45 in a holster, it's possible the death of the child could have been prevented.

There may be a VERY GOOD pro-NRA "right to bear arms" argument here. Any county or municipality that has white-trash or urban drug dealer retards that let these vicious animals run around loose should allow its citizens to carry loaded handguns prepared for the self-defense of HUMAN Americans.

I was also attacked by a pit bull. I know the figures, someone posted them.

People can pretend that all breeds are the same, and it's only bad owners, but facts are facts.

Can't wait for the next mauling by a 'designer dog'. Labra-Oodles can be had already.

Your statements do not make sense. Can you clarify what you were trying to say?

Try visting your local chapter of the American Rottweiler Club http://www.amrottclub.org/...spend some time with the dogs and their owners. You may be surprised.

To be fair, that's not exactly going to be an unbiased source. Rottweiler's are to dogs as bullsharks are to sharks. Many sharks will bite you, then leave, but the bullshark might just rip you to shreds. It's just in them to do so.

Was it an infant or a toddler? A big difference. Also, I would've beat that dog's head to an inch of my life in that scenario regardless of concern for myself.

If my infant child were being mauled to death by a beast, it would only be after I had been rendered completely incapacitated trying to prevent it.

Exactly. I would think that you'd be able to smash the dog's windpipe or at least incapacitate it to some degree.

You know NOTHING about wolves.

Hierarchy in the wolf pack is not a static thing.

The leadership changes on a fairly regular basis. The Alpha's, both male and female, lose weight and weaken due to the constant stress of their positions.

Eventually, a lesser member of the pack will challenge and defeat them. The loser then drops way down the hierarchy where he/she is able to rest and rebuild their strength.

After a time, they will move back up the ladder as the new leaders weaken and are replaced.

Only the Alpha's mate. However, since the leadership changes, a female may have pups from several Alpha and former Alpha males.

The goal of the pack is to raise young and keep the whole pack healthy and strong. A male can not know for certain who is the father of a certain pup so therefore to mistreat any pup is counterproductive. A female Alpha usually drops down the hierarchy after whelping. There are often several females with pups at the same time.

The Alpha female is responsible for the whole pack and it would be counterproductive to hurt any pups. Quite the contrary, any lactating female will nurse any pup, since they might well be related.

They have a built in sense of community that has served the pack well over the millenia.

"It's not the breed it's the owners."

I hope sincerely you never have to preach that line to the jury.

For me, that's enough reason not to own a 150% fanged beast with a...."reputation."

I would not want to be weeping to the jury that my "big loveable 150# galoot" had never bitten anyone....before it mauled the poor child to death.

But HOW MANY golden/lab attacks are recorded versus rotts and pits. Secondly, how many HOMICIDES are caused by goldens/labs versus rotts and pits? Look it up... I did.

And don't get me started on the people who have a pet for 8-10 years or more but then it gets blind or sick so they dump it at the pound!

And here I am carrying my 18 year old cat to his food because he isn't well enough anymore to make the journey to the kitchen by himself. Sorry, there is coming a time soon when I am going to have to put him down.

That I haven't had the time in my life to devote to the care of a dog (which take a lot of time as they are pack animals and need companionship) does not mean I don't care for or understand the species. Always wanted a Samoyed, but I never lived in a place that would have been good for the breed.

A relative of our owns 2 Rotts...one is also a certified therapy dog who does the same.

Katie was a beloved therapy dog, and an ambassador to the breed who made friends wherever she visited. I'll be sure to pass your post to them.

Rottweiler species should be exterminated off the face of the eart.

Rotties are being used as service dogs. If these dogs were so unstable as you think they are, they would never be considered for such jobs. While I do not excuse the dog's reaction and unfortunately he needs to be put down to avoid another attack, I do believe a closer look at the way the dog was being trained and treated by his masters. Most dogs attack due to their masters' foolish behavior.

I have no use for such worthless piles of oxygen-wasting flesh. Such people are repulsive and repugnant to me. I wish them all a bitter and miserable end.
