Dog Rips Child From Mother Arms

GLENDALE — A Rottweiller ripped a toddler out of her mother's arms in Glendale, dragged the child up a driveway and mauled her to death, police said today.

The dog, which belongs to the victim's grandparents, pulled the child from her mother's arms about 7 last night in the 2300 block of Via Saldivar, said Sherri Servillo, a Glendale Police Department spokeswoman.

The infant was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Servillo said.

The woman was housesitting for the child's grandparents, Servillo said, adding authorities received a "hysterical 911 call" after the attack.

The dog is being held by Pasadena Animal Control, she said.

The woman holding the child was also holding a hose and watering a lawn when the 150-pound Rottweiler attacked, said Glendale police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, calling it a "horrific and tragic incident" that has shocked crime scene investigators.

He said the dog dragged the infant several feet down the driveway before mauling her. The mother suffered no major injuries.

After being notified of the attack, Glendale police officers went to the place where the victim's father works in Pasadena and drove him to the hospital where his child was pronounced dead, police said.

The problem with a pit bull is that it has a jaw structure like a Great White Shark and a pea size brain.

Okay, the pit may act like a "pooddie" cat most of the time. However, if it "flips-out" it can kill three infants and 2 kids in less than a minute. These dogs do not belong in public areas.

Bengal tigers perform on stage and act very docile. However, if they get provoked or flustered they can slaughter 50 people before authorities have time to react. That is why they are not allowed to be domesticated. Pit bulls and Rotts do not belong in public.

If people want to own them they should be charged with manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years in prison if their animal attacks and kills humans. Less time if the human is only injured -- maybe only 15 years!

"I think with some dogs you have to be extra clear who the alpha dog is... "

I agree. Particularly with large working dogs. I cringe when I see a Rottweiler or other large dog dragging its owner down the street by a leash. The dogs need a lot of training simply because they were bred to work, pull carts etc, and protect their owners. I would be for requiring owners of certain breeds to train their dogs. IMO an untrained Rottweiler, German Shepard and other breeds are dangerous. Also, over breeding hasn't helped. If anybody wants to own a Rottweiler they had better research the lineage carefully.

"Sadly, in hindsight, I believe it behaved just the way she wanted it to."

Uhhh!

It wasn't her dog.

It was the grandmothers.(assuming her mother)

When I say poodle, I am referring to the 95% which are toy and miniature poodles under 25 pounds.
50-100 pound standard poodles are not a common breed at all, even though they are terrific dogs.

"Rottweilers are one of the most intelligent and lovable breeds. However, they all need obedience training and should never be owned by those unwilling to commit a lot of time to the dog. "

I’ve seen 4 rottweiler child attack stories posted here in the last 2 years. As a toddler “owner”, I think rottweilers should be licensed the same as pets such a lions, assuming they really are statistically more likely to attack than average. And owners should be criminally responsible if they escape or attack.

Bengal tigers perform on stage and act very docile. However, if they get provoked or flustered they can slaughter 50 people before authorities have time to react.

Reminds me of Roy from Sigfield and Roy getting attacked. Roy said after the fact, that a lady with big hair in the front row freaked the tiger out, so the tiger grabbed Roy by the neck and took him backstage to 'safety', almost ripping poor Roy's head off in the process.

The critter may 'mean well', but a 150lb Rottie, a Pit Bull, or a tiger have jaws and teeth capable of doing serious damage.

"After my wife and I were cornered by two for about 15 minutes, I told the owner that from now on I was carrying my gun when in the are and she would do well to keep them confined to her property."

I live a few miles outside town and periodically get someones pets dumped near my house. Rotts will take several well placed .45 Black Talons before they break off of an attack!

Funny that my friend has had 3 and never had one incident with any of them.

Well, that's a responsible attitude.

it;s apparent that these dog's do not like children and parents/relatives(grandparents) having them should be charged. This breed is vicious and attack for no reason.

I have trained and bred dogs for over forty years.
Army dogs, police dogs, hunting, tracking, seeing eye, rescue, guide dogs.

I don't have to look up anything.
Breeds used in police and security work top the bite list, for obvious reasons.

After that come Cockers and poodles and other lap dogs for a long way down the list.

Unless they are untrained and mistreated(untrained IS mistreated) Rottweilers are a very reliable and stable breed.

Yes, but how many stories have you read about a poodle mauling a child (or adult) to death?

Maybe that's what the problem is - the canine unemployment rate.

My other friend has a Pit Bull. and it is a sweetie. It is not aggressive. In fact, it runs and hides from my chihuahua.

It depends on how a dog is raise. My son uesed to have a pit bull that wouldn't hurt a flea. She was that gentle
