I've had the feeling for a long time that as long as he was alive certain factions over there were held in check. It'll be interesting to see if they feel free to operate more openly now.

My fear too...

Deep down, as our bodies turn against us and we are assailed by the brutal and inevitable march of time, aren't we all just a little bit like Generalissimo Francisco Franco?

(Sorry, I can't resist that existential crap)

Let's hope succession goes smoothly, otherwise it could get real ugly. In all likelihood, nothing will happen, cause this guy has been out of commission since 1995.

Cue doomsday scenario... theoretically, its the perfect time for Islamists to topple the weak and corrupt House of Saud, which would be very ugly, cause we'd have to go in, just as Iran starts acting up again.

Why? He's not *actually* been in charge for some time. I wish folks would realize that democracy is not a good *fit* for every people. Just look at Iran. Or Nazi Germany.

You have to have moved to a certain place culturally and a certain level of positive economic growth to avoid electing crazy folk.

I propose elections in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia would offer up a Saddam, Taliban or worse because the "man on the street" is not as Western-friendly as the royal family.

Uncalled for bigotry.

He's been gravely ill since suffering a major stroke in 1995. Because of that his half-brother Crown Prince Abdullah, has served as de facto regent. Fahd was hospitalized in May in serious condition and has been there since. He was probably 82 at the time of his death.

Did you sneeze Allegra ? Bless you ;)

Hasn't the King died a few times in the last few months ? Last time they feared rioting .

Uncalled for bigotry.

No, ironic humor. Everything that goes wrong in the Arab world is blamed on Israel, including bad breath in goats.

I put the over/under at 24 hours.

Uncalled for bigotry.

Hardly uncalled for, and the only bigotry is from the crazed Muslims. Look at all of the conspiracy theories that came out after Arafat checked into hell. Are you even paying attention?

"I wish folks would realize that democracy is not a good *fit* for every people. Just look at Iran. Or Nazi Germany."

Ooh. You could get me on my favourite philosphical discussion here. I broadly agree with the point you are making. I would paraphrase it slightly - democracy without a decent consituttion or enshrined seperation of powers between the branches of state is simply Mob Rule. I believe the Iranian and 1930s German examples bare this out.

I think the Americans themselves often underestimate the contribution the seperation of powers has had to its unstoppable development as a force for good. (And I folks here think the supreme court stinks so I might be on a looser arguing this thread!).

Also as a precursor to introducing democracy you have to have the 'rule of law' in place. Iraq is still fragile on this point - the Saudi's would not be if they had the will.
