Sudan's VP Garang killed in crash

Sudan's Vice-President John Garang, a former rebel leader, has been killed in a crash, a UN official has said.

Mr Garang had been missing since Saturday, when contact was lost with his helicopter flying back from Uganda.

He was greeted as a peacemaker by more than a million people when he was sworn in three weeks ago as part of a deal ending a decades-long civil war.

The BBC's Jonah Fisher says Mr Garang's importance in holding together southern Sudan cannot be overstated.

I agree. The war has just begun - it never really stopped.

The Sudanese Christians I know were doubtful about the peace deal all along. They are so right.

I, also, have had contact with Sudanese Christians for whom Garang's death is considered "tragic".

"Tragic" doesn't begin to describe this evil assassination.

Foul Play may or may not have been involved. Besides, it is quite possible that this will not ever be clearly confirmed one way or another. And instability may follow even if this was purely accidental... Next few months will be ...interesting.

Museveni isn't buying "the accident". His complete statement is very interesting!
