Seventy percent of consumers said they were unlikely to purchase from, or even return to, a Web site that has pop-up advertising, registration log-on pages, software installation, or slow-loading pages, E-Commerce Times reports.
A study, commissioned by Hostway, a Chicago-based Web site hosting service, found that approximately 35 percent of visitors to commercial sites said pop-up ads were their number one pet peeve.
More than 24 percent of the respondents said they were extremely or somewhat likely to complain to the company when they were exasperated by a site.
My first assumption when designing a website is that everyone coming to the site is using a dialup connection.So I keep the total size per page at 100k or less. Also zero popups. The advertisements have to blend in with the page itself. Popups are the Telemarketers of the Internet in my opinion. And we all know how most of us feel about Telemarketers.
Oh, really? Then why are the number of pop-ups and SPAMs increasing.

I said that common sense works, not that very many people had it.
As for newspaper registration, someone needs to start a revolution: each time a reader follows a link to a news site to read a story but is asked to register, they should write to the editor saying simply "I was intrigued by your story 'Story Title Here' dated dd/mm/yy, but I will not visit your website to read it because I simply refuse to register to use it. Thus, your advertiser will not be getting my clicks."
If enough people did this, listing the specific article each and every time, the registration requirements would disappear.

Like you, I love Firefox for many reasons, including popup blocking. So over the last few weeks I’ve been surprised to see occasional popups.
It turns out that some clever people figured out that you could launch popups from Flash, getting around the Firefox default settings.
Fortunately, you can get around it:
Type about:config into the Firefox location bar. Right-click on the page and select New and then Integer. Name it privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins Set the value to 2.
The possible values are:
0: Allow all popups from plugins.
1: Allow popups, but limit them to dom.popup_maximum.
2: Block popups from plugins.
3: Block popups from plugins, even on whitelisted sites.
Drudge is the only site I have problems with. I'm not going to waste keystrokes just so I can go to his site. I have everything else working fine.
BTW, I'm starting to get spam on my fax machine at home. I simply send a 5 page return fax asking the sender to cease sending me unsolicited faxes. I use completely black pages with highlighted wording.

One of the new popups at drudgereport is for a porn site. Classy stuff, Matt.
Some webadmins are lured by an easy way to generate money for each click from their website, but some sites become so convuluted with pop-ups and redirects that you can't even reach their homepage. I don't know what these people could be thinking, ultimately the best way to generate money from the web is to offer a legitimate product or service and work hard at attaining rank in the major search engines. It's harder to do, but it will ultimately lead to more stable income and keep you from attracting the interest of lawyers- which will be increasingly likely in the future IMHO.
Hm, I disabled my blocker and got two non-porn-related pop-ups (Vonage and University of Phoenix).

Matt Drudge is about to loose me as a reader for these reasons - pop-ups, slow-loading pages. I can come here, catch up on 'Breaking News', see new comments to me, and get to 'Latest Posts' before the DrudgeReport loads - and I get no pop-ups! BTW, thanks, Jim!
I hate them too. And, I virtually never go to Drudge anymore.
Common sense is cheaper, too.

How exactly do you clean up your computer? I'm not very computer literate when it comes to these types of software programs.
Google tool bar stops most pop ups.
