When bin Laden discussed the September 11 attack with its chief planner, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, they thought of hitting nuclear facilities but decided to leave the nuclear targets "for now". After the attack, al-Qa'ida's then spokesman, Suleiman Abu Gheith, asserted its right to "kill four million Americans, two million of them children, and to exile twice as many and wound and cripple hundreds of thousands". No prizes for guessing how they intended to kill so many.

If a 10-kiloton nuclear weapon, a midget even smaller than the one that destroyed Hiroshima, exploded in Times Square, the fireball would reach tens of millions of degrees Fahrenheit.
It would vaporize or destroy the theater district, Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal and Carnegie Hall (along with me and my building). The blast would partly destroy a much larger area, including the United Nations. On a weekday some 500,000 people would be killed.

US Vulnerable to Catastrophic Attack

Despite the federal government's expensive efforts to prevent terrorists from smuggling a nuclear weapon into the U.S., the nation remains extremely vulnerable to a catastrophic attack, experts have warned a House committee.
The radiation detection systems installed across the U.S. are "quite limited in their capabilities and, in general, are insufficient to the task," said physicist Richard L. Wagner Jr., chairman of the Defense Department task force on preventing a clandestine nuclear attack.
Said Rep. Pascrell: "I am not too hopeful about this situation."
