Herb May Help Cut Alcohol Intake (Kudzu)

An invasive vine called kudzu may help reduce alcohol intake and curb binge drinking, says new research in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.

The U.S. study of 14 men and women found that those who took capsules of kudzu drank an average of 1.8 beers per session, compared with 3.5 beers per session drunk by those who took a placebo, the Associated Press reported.

Researcher Scott Lukas of the Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital wasn't sure why kudzu seemed to reduce alcohol intake. It may be because kudzu increases blood alcohol levels and speeds up alcohol's effects, meaning that the people who took kudzu needed fewer drinks to feel drunk, Lukas suggested.

"That rapid infusion of alcohol is satisfying them and taking away their desire for more drinks. That's only a theory. It's the best we've got so far," Lukas told the AP.

LOL! Down here in Georgia we have learned the best way to plant Kudzu, through it over your shoulder and run!

Beat me to it.

Intriguing. I doubt kudzu will be regulated at all no matter what gets figgered out. Somehow I think "when kudzu is outlawed, only outlaws will have kudzu" works here.

It'd be interesting to see 'em try, though...

Somehow I don't think kudzu is going to be very responsive to regulations.

Nope. In fact, fighting it might create some horrible, SUPER fast-growing monster kudzu strain that would take over the world.

Best not to meddle.

The Kudzu line used to run right through Elizabethtown KY.

As hot as this summer has been it might be up to Portland Maine.

14 people does not make good statistics. Even if I am reading it wrong and they had 28 people, that is still not good statistics.

My thoughts exactly, just plain lazy research.

"Introduced to the United States at the turn of the century from Japan, kudzu, Pueraria lobata, was extensively planted throughout much of the southeast as an ornamental plant, for a forage crop, and most importantly for erosion control. Kudzu's rapid growth of up to several feet a day, made it ideal for stabilizing ditches, gullies and steep slopes. Once widely promoted, kudzu can be a serious pest of CRP pines and control is difficult and expensive."

Why not harvest the stuff and sell it for fodder?

"The Government will outlaw it and try to exterminate it"

Fat chance...You obviously do not live in the rural south.
It would take all the agent orange dumped on Viet Nam and then some to put a dent in the Kudzu.
I had a farm in west Tennessee. I was quite lucky not to have kudzu, other then a small patch that developed at the front gate. I kept it a bay for a few years, but it just got larger each year.
I sold that place before it ate me !

An eradication effort would free the South, too.
