Retailer asked to shed anti-Mexican T-shirt
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | July 23, 2005 | Associated Press

Posted on 07/23/2005 7:57:27 AM PDT by Graybeard58

"New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico."

"This is saying that the country of Mexico is a dirty place," said Barry Morrison, regional director of the civil rights group. "Dirty can be interpreted figuratively and literally."

The group wants the Philadelphia-based retailer to get rid of all its inventory.

Urban Outfitters did not immediately return calls for comment Friday. The retailer, which targets 18- to 30-year-olds, has run into similar controversy before.

Two years ago, it stopped selling a game called "Ghettopoly" after protests by black civil rights leaders. Last year, it halted sales of a T-shirt that read "Everyone Loves A Jewish Girl," surrounded by dollar signs, after the Anti-Defamation League objected.

A "Voting is for Old People" T-shirt angered pro-voting groups.

Urban Outfitters operates 77 stores in the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. This year, first-quarter profits rose by 60 percent to $27.4 million, compared to the same period a year ago.

Gee, where's freedom of expression now?

Let me guess: It just goes away when the proletarians are the ones being "offended."

A place where it's common to be warned away from drinking the water seems to fit this title, moron.
If the shoe fits....

Um isn't that a try statement, I have never been to New Mexico, but I have been to Mexico and it really is not a clean place.

"New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico."

Er, as a West Texan who frequently goes to New Mexico, I'm here to tell you in their defense, the above is pretty much their only bragging point.

While I understand why this t-shirt may offend Mexicans, it's folly to suggest that Mexico is not "a dirty country."

Hook Mr. Morrison up to a polygraph and ask him if he would trade the air quality of Mexico City to that of any American metropolis. Ask him if he knows of any American city where entire families live and are raised in the city dump. And, finally, ask him how many people who cross over from New Mexico to Mexico vs. Mexico to New Mexico.

No kidding - same type of liberals who claim it's a right to burn the US flag, don't want a retailer selling shirts that far more fit freedom of expression.

I too dislike some of the shirts messages - but the one in question this time is actually a TRUE statement....

So true....and, wasn't there a case where numerous folks were sickened by eating Mexican vegetables that had been irrigated with sewer water?

BTW, since when is the statement of fact an offensive attack?

Oooopppssss....nevermind.

I bet if the shirt had an anti US statement on it it would be okay to sell.

I've lived both in New Mexico and West Texas. New Mexico may not be perfect but at least it's not West Texas.
