Blasts kill 83 in Egyptian Red Sea resort Sat Jul 23, 2005 11:37 AM BST

By Tom Perry

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (Reuters) - At least 83 people were killed and 200 injured when car bombs ripped through markets and hotels in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Saturday in the worst attack in Egypt since 1981.

Shaken European tourists spoke of mass panic and hysteria as people fled the carnage in the early hours, with bodies strewn across the roads, people screaming and sirens wailing.

The regional governor said two car bombs and possibly a suitcase bomb had rocked the resort, popular with divers and European holidaymakers.

One blast tore the front off the Ghazala Gardens Hotel in Naama Bay, the site of most of the resort's luxury hotels. People were feared trapped in the rubble of the lobby.

A car broke into the hotel compound and exploded in front of the building, South Sinai Governor Mustafa Afifi said.

A senior security source in Sharm el-Sheikh said 83 people were killed and 23 people were in critical condition, from among 35 casualties taken to Cairo for treatment.

Most of the victims were Egyptians but the Tourism Minsirty spokeswoman said Seven non-Egyptians were dead, including a Czech and an Italian, and 20 were injured.

The injured foreigners were nine Italians, five Saudis, three Britons, a Russian, a Ukrainian and an Israeli Arab, spokesman Hala el-Khatib told reporters. But the British Foreign Office in London said that eight Britons were injured.

A group claiming links to the al Qaeda organisation said it carried out the bombings in retaliation for "crimes committed against Muslims", according to an Internet statement.

Terrorism like this attack in Egypt is further proof that the enemy plays by their own rules and want to make the whole world engage in this war.
Innocent people were slaughtered. whether in NY, London or Cairo and my heart is heavy for their families.
It is tempting to mis-direct our anger toward the governments where each attack occurs. But, that's not going to solve the terror problem.

I guess I'd like to see SOME differentiation between Islam as a religion and "Islamism" as a form of government. Islamism is definetly NOT a religion but the expression of facism in the guise of a religion.

I have NO tolerance for those that would foment violence perpetrated against our country or other free countries in the world but I would also not want to lump into the 'Islamofacist' extremists those that peacefully engage in their choice of religious observance.

Against the argument that the Islamic religious literature states that violence is the proper response to some situations I might want to consider that in the Bible's Old Testament my God punished some of his leaders for failing to commit genocide ( cleansing ) in some of the lands that he gave to His people.

The more muslims come to dominate a society the louder that society will scream when the muslim advance is threatened.

No, but this was aimed at the tourist trade and the fact security is so high in other countries.

Exactly.

It is interesting that Egypt is a chosen target however, is this possibly an indication of capitulation? Certainly it shows frustration, disarray, and desperation on the part of the enemy.

The Egyption reaction should be to send troops to Iraq to join the fray. The jihadis should get the message clearly that their actions can be counterproductive, which can possibly take them from desperation toward HUMILIATION, the precursor stage in any war to CAPITULATION.

The terrorist are going on a killing spree, look for more this coming year. The killing will be indiscriminate and they will point to us and our allies. Then one of two things will happen, it will either strengthen our resolve or it will tear us apart. Let us hope for the former.

If your analogy was relevant, you would be implying that the Jewish people spent the next 1,400 years massacring everybody they could find. The Islamic "religion" has massacre of non-Muslims as its very center.

Wasn't Anwar Sadat assasinated by an islamic extremist?

Yes, by army soldiers that were members of Egyptian Islamic Jihad.

Anwar Sadat

I trust you are aware that Egypt was an entirely Christian nation before the Islamic invasions of the 600's?

but I don't believe Egypt is involved in Iraq are they?

Just diplomatically. Not in the war.

Egypt is kind of lacking an Ambassador to Iraq at the moment, though.

Nobody blames Iraq/Bush/Blair for this one. I was working since yesterday evening without interception here in Germany, listened to the radio and heared absolutely nothing that is corresponding to your statement. The terror in Egypt is a local problem. Everybody with a interest in Egypt knows, that it is quite likely that "Gamaa Islamiya" (the terrorists that murdered Sadat) is behind the plot. Those guys have no link to Iraq or to the buddies America and the UK are dealing with. Maybe there is something like islamic solidarity or other BS, but this assault would have happend with or without Iraq.

In the broader sense it is nothing new, that the terror in London was triggered by the war in Iraq. Although there was always a disposition for terror inside the islamic part of the society in western Europe, there was relative "peace" before the war. Tony Blair was well aware that he opended a pandora's box, when he joined into the coalition. It was was more important to solve the problem in Iraq than to keep the fragile peace between Britain and a few crazy morons. This was a reasonable decision. Of course there is to pay a bitter price now (it must be extremely sick to loose a loved one to those a**holes), but believe me, the Brits are going to make the Islamists paying a higher one. To say this, is not disturbing, it is the plain truth.

Regards from "old" Europe.

If you want to find something enraging, read the Iranian statement about the attack....The approach of the United States in the war on terror has made the world a less safe place.......

That's not the IRANIANS saying that !
It was Nancy(Skulface)Pelosi or Teddy(Killer Blimp)Kennedy.

I read yesterday that Iran is opening a resort for infidels. It will be run by an Iranian Christian and will be off limits to Muslims. My guess is that it will last maybe fifteen minutes before it explodes.

Never give firearms, explosives or whiskey to the primitives.

The bombings in Egypt follows the pattern of the typical cowardly Islamic Jihad assassins; attack only unarmed women and babies from ambush while wearing skimasks.

More proof that muzlims can only destroy and cannot build.
They have no cause, their religion a chimera.

Muzlims are looked at with increasing contempt by the rest of the world. As the Mother said in RADIO DAYS "What do those Nazis want?"

Even the insane have reasons for doing what they do. They are just insane reasons. Their logic goes something like this: Allow us to rule over all of the Islamic countries and we will oppress you and kill you, but in fewer numbers than now (maybe).

It's getting a bit ridiculous to try to pinpoint the starting point of this mess/war. 1948, Kuwait, Balkans, 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, so on and so on...It is futile. It is a War to be fought on many fronts in many battles.

Unfortunately the Madrid bombings and the associated capitulation on Zapatero's socialists gave the ennemy the roadmap for a possible victory. No greater damage could have been done than this to fuel the terrorist and cause more deaths around the world.

To continue to say that Iraq is the problem implies that bailing out of Iraq is the solution and that is the way the spaniards socialists responded. The result of which has been more deaths and destruction.
Appeasement is the path to defeat.

What else is there to know besides the fact that they think anyone outside of Islamofacism is an infidel and they want to dominate the world? Oh, and they want infidels dead. Explain please.

Is that the building that was used to train fire fighters? The Jihadist union acquiesced to the clamoring (claymoring?) hoards who were arguing that since they were expending all that those charges and accelerant, it was only right that they should take out some infidels each time.

Afterward from now on, they will simply reset the scenario with little whitewash and replace the rug.

The imams were blessing all those explosives, and it was out-and-out sacrilege that it was being expended without killing infidels, you see.

Even one infidel per exercise would be better than the current rate of IEDs in Iraq.

free world adopts unfortunately orwellian measures to combat the terror.

Oh, the Orwellian measures are already well under way. The only question now is if that succeeds or the Islamics continue to try and talk out of both sides of their mouths, thinking they can win.

Orwellian measures, at some point, may continue into the realm of Hitlerian measures...and beyond. Four years ago, I figured some good ole fashioned non PC whoop-ass would knock things back for a decade or two.

But the non-PC whoop ass never happened. I fear that because we did not "neutralize" a few millions of moslems in the last few years, that in the next few years, we will need to "neutralize" an order of magnitude more.
